🇧🇯#Benin: A group of soldiers in Benin, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, appeared on state TV claiming they had overthrown President Patrice Talon earlier today. Gunfire was reported around the presidential palace and other areas in Porto-Novo, and some journalists working for the state broadcaster were reportedly taken hostage. The soldiers justified their actions by criticizing the president’s handling of the worsening security situation in northern Benin, where the army has faced losses amid the spread of jihadist militants from Niger and Burkina Faso. Meanwhile, the government of Benin has declared that Talon is safe and that "loyal troops" have restored control, stopping the coup attempt. (via BBC)
