#libs#async

#Explosion reported in #Mekelle; Officials say no casualties An explosion occurred late Thursday in Mekelle near the Social Science campus of Mekelle University, though officials say there were no casualties or property damage. Redahegn Feseha, head of the Mekelle Peace and Security Bureau, told local radio that the blast happened at around 9:30 p.m. near the upper gate of the city’s business campus. He described the incident as a deliberate act aimed at creating fear rather than causing harm, urging residents to remain calm and to condemn what he called an “act of terror.” Residents reported a mix of fear and confusion. “I was sitting with my family when we heard a loud bang. My kid and my wife were terrified,” said one resident. Another added, “At first, we thought it was a drone attack or something falling. But later we heard it was a bomb.” https://www.facebook.com/share/p/19x2dWByCq/

#Commentary: Stalled Recovery, Rising Fragility: #Tigray between self-reliance and societal collapse As forces reportedly mass near #Ethiopia’s Tigray region, fears of renewed war are rising. In this commentary, Duke Burbridge notes, “It’s anyone’s guess whether Tigray will be a target or a staging ground to attack #Eritrea,” but either outcome would devastate civilians still reeling from past atrocities. After visiting areas from #Mekelle to hard-hit rural districts, he found one constant: “Suffering and despair are endemic.” Most people lack necessities, while reconstruction has barely begun since the 2022 ceasefire. In displacement camps, life is now “harder than it was during the war.” “Survival has limits,” Burbridge emphasizes, cautioning that if the federal government chooses conflict over rebuilding, it will "eventually lose the war against its people." https://addisstandard.com/?p=55491

#Ethiopia: Political commentator, Mekelle University lecturer Shewit Gebregzabher detained in Mekelle Shewit Gebregzabher, a political commentator, lecturer at Mekelle University and co-founder of #Romanat_Media, was reportedly detained by security forces in #Mekelle, the capital of #Tigray, on Friday morning. Shewit was conducting his media work when a man in civilian clothing approached him, identified himself as a police officer, and took him away without presenting a court-issued arrest warrant, eyewitnesses told Addis Standard. Kahsay Hailu, who was with Shewit at the time, told Addis Standard that he saw police taking Shewit to the police station. “I followed Shewit to the police station. He asked me to collect his media accessories, which I later gave to his wife, and informed her of his whereabouts.” His wife, Zufan Teklehaimanot, also told Addis Standard that he is currently being held at the Adihaki Sub-city police station in Mekelle. News: #Tigray authorities warn against unjustified price hikes amid market anxiety Authorities in Tigray have issued coordinated warnings against what they describe as unjustified price hikes and market disruptions, amid heightened public anxiety linked to recent transport interruptions. In statements released over the past two days, the Tigray Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations, the Tigray Interim Administration (#TIA), and the #Mekelle City Administration said prices of basic commodities have risen in several cities, including Mekelle, despite the absence of significant supply shortages. The Chamber of Commerce said some traders have used the temporary suspension of #Ethiopian Airlines flights to & from Tigray as a pretext to raise prices on essential goods. While noting that most merchants are not engaged in such practices, the Chamber warned that the actions of a few risk harming the reputation of the wider business community... https://x.com/addisstandard/status/2017598910542365002?s=20

#Tigray Interim President says only “slim chance” for #peace remains, vows to exhaust it Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede, Tigray Interim Administration President, said there is only a slim chance left to resolve disputes with the federal government through peaceful means but stressed that his administration is determined to exhaust that option before any further escalation. Speaking during the 51st anniversary commemoration of the founding of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (#TPLF) in #Mekelle, Tadesse said dialogue under the framework of the Pretoria Peace Agreement remains possible, though narrowing amid unresolved issues and renewed tensions, the regional broadcaster reported. President Tadesse reminded attendees that the war formally ended with the signing of the Pretoria Peace Agreement and stressed that efforts have since been underway to resolve Tigray’s grievances through peaceful means. However, he said, key issues under the agreement remain unanswered. https://addisstandard.com/?p=55230

News: #Tigray marks Adwa anniversary amid renewed political tensions Authorities in Tigray have commemorated the 130th anniversary of the historic Battle of #Adwa, framing the occasion not only as a celebration of past triumph but also as a reflection of the region’s current political and territorial challenges. In a statement issued yesterday, the Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau described the 1896 victory at Adwa as a defining moment of African resistance and a symbol of resilience deeply rooted in Tigray’s history. The bureau emphasized the role of Tigrayan forces in late 19th-century battles against Ottoman, Egyptian, Italian and Dervish expansionist campaigns, highlighting the leadership of Ras Alula Abanega in key confrontations at Gundet, Gura and Dogali prior to the decisive defeat of Italian forces at Adwa. However, this year’s commemoration unfolded against a backdrop of heightened tensions between #Mekelle and #Addis_Abeba...... Read more: https://addisstandard.com/?p=55504

News: #Tigray interim President warns current dispute could trigger war, endanger all of #Ethiopia A peaceful demonstration was held at the Baloni Stadium in #Mekelle city protesting the recent decision by Ethiopia’s House of Federation and the National #Electoral Board of Ethiopia. Addressing the rally, Lt. Gen. Tadesse Woreda, President of the Tigray Interim Administration, warned that an issue that should be resolved politically must not be allowed to escalate into armed conflict. Tadesse argued that the matter at hand is fundamentally political rather than legal. “This decision is not merely a matter for the House of Federation, the Ethiopian Election Board, or the law. It is political, & its solution must also be political,” he stated. Meanwhile, #TPLF chairman Debrestion Gebremichael (PhD) warned against what he described as a plot aimed at permanently disintegrating Tigray, calling on the public to remain united in defending the region’s interests... News: #AU monitoring team returns to #Mekelle after tensions renew focus on #Pretoria agreement An advance team of African experts under the African Union’s Monitoring, Verification and Compliance Mechanism (#AU-MVCM) has arrived in Mekelle, resuming its “mandate of monitoring the implementation” of the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (#COHA), the AU Commission’s Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department said on today. According to the Commission, the team redeployed after an “administrative break” to resume their mandate the office said was “crucial” to the implementation of the of the COHA, signed between the federal government and the #Tigray People’s Liberation Front (#TPLF) in November 2022. The resumption of the task comes amid concerns over renewed tensions, clashes and drone strikes in parts of Tigray. Last week, the AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf .... News: Fuel shortages deepen in #Addis_Abeba, regional cities as drivers endure prolonged queues Drivers in Addis Abeba and several regional cities report worsening fuel shortages, with prolonged queues and dwindling supplies deepening the strain caused by recent price hikes. At present, beyond rising costs, fuel is reportedly becoming increasingly scarce in cities including #Mekelle, #Jimma, #Ambo and #Bahir_Dar. Drivers who spoke to Addis Standard described spending hours in queues at fuel stations, often with no guarantee of securing supply. A public transport driver in Mekelle said the situation has deteriorated sharply. “Beyond the price hike, it feels like fuel is heading toward complete disappearance. We are buying a 20-litre jerrycan for 8,000 birr, and that too after waiting in line for more than five hours,” he said. Read more: https://addisstandard.com/?p=55586
