#BRICS2024 🎙Remarks by President of Russia Vladimir Putin at the Plenary Session of the BRICS Business Forum(October 18, 2024) 💬 I am sincerely delighted to welcome everyone to the BRICS Business Forum. I would like to note the wide representation of participants in this hall. We have leading business representatives from every country in the BRICS group. Your companies have been successfully cooperating for a long time, implementing impressive joint projects across a variety of domains: industry and energy, transport and infrastructure, agriculture and the digital economy. I would like to note, in particular, that this Forum is attended by business leaders from countries that became full participants on January 1, 2024. These are our colleagues and friends from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. 👉 I would like to emphasise that as the current chair of #BRICS, Russia strives to facilitate integration of new members into all cooperation mechanisms. We saw that representatives from the new BRICS countries were warmly received in the Business Council, and they, too, became actively involved in its work. The theme of Russia’s BRICS Chairmanship in 2024 is Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security. A meaningful action plan is being implemented to advance the partners on three major tracks: • politics and security, • economy and finance, • cultural and humanitarian ties. To date, the progress on the plan exceeds 80%. ℹ️ Over 200 events, meetings, conferences, and industry gatherings have been held, as well as most of the expert and ministerial meetings. However, the BRICS Summit, which will open next week in the Russian city of Kazan, will be the central event. It is symbolic that the leaders’ meeting in Kazan is preceded by this Business Forum, which underscores the importance of close economic partnership between our countries, promoting trade and investment, and deepening cooperation. 📹 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s video address to the organisers and participants of the 6th International Municipal BRICS Forum(August 27, 2024) 💬 I am pleased to welcome the organisers and participants of the 6th International Municipal BRICS Forum, which is being hosted by Moscow, a city famous not only for its unique history, architecture, and vibrant cultural and sports scene, but also for its advancements in modern urban development, transportation, infrastructure, and organisation of urban life. I am confident that the Russian capital, along with other Russian cities, has much to share with our partners from #BRICS countries. In turn, we are interested in learning from the best practices of our friends. The relevance of these mutually enriching exchanges is clear: according to expert estimates, the share of urban residents is rising steadily and is now in excess of 56 percent of the world population. This dictates the need to devise a long-term and well-considered policy aimed at promoting the steady development of municipalities and creating a comfortable urban environment for all residents. Municipal and regional cooperation within BRICS is making strides and holds a significant place on the agenda. In June of this year, the BRICS Association of Cities and Municipalities was launched, and Nizhny Novgorod hosted a highly successful Forum of Twinned Cities and Municipal Formations. I am confident that the 6th International Municipal BRICS Forum will make a unique contribution to strengthening ties between our countries and peoples. The number of forum participants, over 5,000 delegates from about 500 cities worldwide, as well as the packed agenda for upcoming discussions, serve as clear evidence of the relevance of this event. Notably, Türkiye, a NATO member, which was rather surprising to me. Conversely, it has been reported that Kazakhstan, through the statement of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's Press Secretary, has expressed no intention of joining BRICS in the foreseeable future. Why is there such activity and interest in this group of nations? Why is everyone invited to join it? What are the future prospects for BRICS? Is it not in competition with other international entities? 💬Sergey Lavrov:#BRICS epitomises the shifts that have long been underway in the global economy. New centres of economic growth are emerging, and alongside them comes financial influence, which in turn brings political influence. <...> BRICS has prioritised the needs of its nations, and interest in the grouping continues to grow. We are ready to invite them, and have invited them before to various events as guests of the chair. Following the decision of last year’s summit, we are working at the level of experts and ministers to prepare a proposal on a new BRICS partner country category. One of the countries that announced their interest in becoming a participant in BRICS – and did it publicly – was Türkiye. The country is indeed a member of the North Atlantic Alliance. <...> For decades, Türkiye has not been allowed to join the European Union, with respective talks hindered in every possible way. It is unlikely that the EU will ever change its negative stance, which is another argument in favour of Türkiye’s increasing rapprochement with BRICS. <...> 🤝 What makes BRICS and other Global Majority or Global East associations that do not include Western countries stand out, is that they are not created for the purpose of struggling or fighting with anyone. They are established to collectively benefit from their competitive advantages such as geographical location, shared history, cultural and humanitarian proximity, and coherence of economic systems, as is the case of the former Soviet republics. This is an objectively occurring process. The West has been proving time and again that it is not just willing, but never hesitates to use illegal sanctions against any country it sees as a threat to its economic domination, violating the global market economy principles it supposedly champions. #BRICS2024 🎙 Opening remarks by Russia's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Russia's Sherpa in BRICS Sergey Ryabkov at the BRICS Sherpas/Sous Sherpas Meeting in Yekaterinburg, Russia (November 27, 2024) Key talking points: • Let me particularly welcome the two new BRICS Sous Sherpas — esteemed Ms. Paula Barboza from Brazil and Ms. Lemlem Fiseha Minale from Ethiopia. I think we will benefit from their great experience and great capabilities they showed on their previous assignments. • In BRICS, we work in a very close, pro-active and constructive manner. This is the last Sherpas/Sous Sherpas Meeting under the Russian Chairmanship. This year we have achieved great results together. There has been significant progress on all three pillars of our cooperation: policy and security, economyand finance, humanitarian and people-to-people contacts. • We have some solid deliverables. In particular, the agreement to establish BRICS Grain Exchange, the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development, the Working Group on Nuclear Medicine. A transport dialogue was launched. • We have important developments on the finance track — particularly, on establishing independent and sustainable payment mechanisms with specific focus on the use of national currencies. A milestone achievement is the BRICS Partner Category. • Amid increasing tensions in international relations, worsening long-standing political and economic problems, growing danger of new challenges and threats, BRICS stood strong and focused, its fortitude has been ever more strengthened with the expansion — this was clearly manifested at the XVI Summit in Kazan, in particular, at the BRICS Plus/Outreach session. Key points: Prospects for the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis • All the parties are in favour of resolving the conflict at the earliest opportunity, preferably through peaceful means. You may be aware that the People's Republic of China and Brazil put forward an initiative at the General Assembly in New York. Numerous BRICS nations endorse these initiatives, and we, in turn, extend our gratitude to our partners for their attention to this conflict and their pursuit of methods to resolve it. • We are ready to discuss a peace agreement in any shape or form based on the reality on the ground. That is to say, I am not ready to accept anything else. On alleged Russia's interference in the US electoral process and the prospects for normalization of Russia-US relations • This issue has been making headlines for years now. <...> However, after an investigation conducted in the United States, everyone, including US Congress, concluded that it was utter nonsense and that nothing of the kind ever happened. There were no contacts back then, and there are none now. • Russia-US relations after the elections depend primarily on the United States. If the United States is open to building normal relations with Russia, we will do the same. If not, so be it. This is up to the future Administration. On global and regional stability, security and building a just world • Is it fair in terms of security that you have for years disregarded our repeated requests to our partners not to expand NATO eastward? Is it fair that you lied through your teeth, saying that the bloc would not expand while doing precisely that in violation of your commitments? <...> Is it fair that you violated your commitments within the OSCE, when all Western countries signed a document stating that no country may ensure its security at the expense of other countries? ❗️This is not fair. We want to change this, and we will change it. The situation in the Middle East • I believe that there is no person on Earth whose heart does not bleed when they see what is happening in Gaza. Over 40,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed. • The solution can only be found by addressing the root causes, the primary one being the lack of a fully recognized, sovereign Palestinian state.
