#Opinion by Maria Zakharova
Medvedchuk’s spouse Oksana Marchenko appealed to the British government and people: “I appeal to the relatives and friends of Aiden Eslin and Sean Pinner: Angela Eslin, Nathan and Shannon Wood, Derby and Evan Pinner. It's in your power to ask the Prime Minister of your country, Boris Johnson, to influence the Ukrainian leadership and achieve the release of Aiden and Sean by exchanging them for the Ukrainian opposition politician detained by the Kiev authorities, my husband Viktor Medvedchuk.”
💬 Maria Zakharova: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who recently went to Kiev, must be aware of the developments with Her Majesty’s subjects. He is sure to reply, isn’t he?
Meanwhile, Liz Truss might take the opportunity to reveal what exactly the British nationals were doing there [in Mariupol, with Neo-Nazis] anyway.

💀 Will Gateway kill the TON Foundation?
⚫️️️ For any organization, a key task is to understand its effectiveness. And while commercial companies see profit as a result, non-profits, like the TON Foundation, do not have similar KPIs. And lately, there has been a growing feeling that the foundation exists in a vacuum, detached from the community and the market. Today's subjective #opinion is about this.
⚫️️️ The upcoming Gateway promises to be a harsh reality check for the foundation and an external audit of the quality of work over the past year and a half. To recognize it as successful, only three things are needed: a report on the work, developer interest, and audience attention. But there are problems with each point. We will discuss them in order.
⚫️️️ Report on work done. 2025 was not marked by significant breakthroughs. Rather, it was a year of loud announcements and quiet cancellations. TON Memelandia, tgBTC, "Golden Visas" — these initiatives raised...

🚀 What were the past Gateways like?
⚫️ Some people entered the TON ecosystem during the "gift wave" in 2025. And with the Gateway announcement, it's not obvious to such people: what kind of event is this anyway? That is why today's #opinion column is nostalgic.
⚫️ The official TON Gateway conference has already been held twice, in 2023 and 2024. We attended both events, and they were very different:
⚫️ The first Gateway took place at the relatively small conference venue of the Le Meridien hotel. People from the CIS gathered there, who generally were already in the same Telegram chats. Almost everyone crossed paths in the coffee zone, and over two days, you could see all your acquaintances there without missing the talks you were interested in. Compared to the second one, it was a "close-knit gathering."
⚫️ For the second event, a larger venue was chosen (Grand Hyatt). And not in vain; on the wave of Tap-to-Earn popularity, it turned out to be full. It now...

👁 What to expect from Gateway?
⚫️ The main TON announcement of this week: the Gateway conference has been confirmed for May 1-2 in Dubai, tickets are on sale, and organizers expect "1500 builders." But what do we expect? We've outlined a subjective view in the #opinion section.
⚫️On one hand, it's easy to react to this news with skepticism and chuckles. Saying that back in 2024 (riding the wave of "clicker" success), TON could gather 1500 people in Dubai. Now, some have become disillusioned with the ecosystem, while others simply don't have the money for such trips.
⚫️However, there are also some grounds for cautious optimism. For instance, if the goal is to gather more people in Dubai, and they aren't keen on flying — then the organizers have a reason to make an effort. Perhaps we'll see some incentives designed to revive the ecosystem, replacing the long-ceased "Open League" and the stalled "Meme Republic."

👁 Privacy and trade-offs
⚫️ This week, Dubai restricted "untraceable blockchains" like Monero and Zcash: trading their tokens on regulated Dubai exchanges was banned. Therefore, in our #opinion column, let's talk about how the TON/Telegram ecosystem relates to such "private systems."
⚫️ Let us recall that in a regular blockchain, all transactions are visible; it's just unknown whose is whose (and sometimes it is possible to figure it out). But some blockchains are originally made for "untraceable transactions." This appeals to both privacy connoisseurs and criminals. And in places like Dubai, they ban it because of the latter, making life difficult for the former.
⚫️Speaking of approaches to privacy, a parallel can be drawn between Telegram and TON. On the one hand, privacy has value for both projects. Telegram was actually launched in 2013 with the positioning of a "secure messenger" because it immediately had e2e encryption, while other popular...

👁 Will an upturn come?
⚫️ Over the holidays, Anatoliy Makosov (TON Core) published a post stating that the crypto world moves in cycles of downturns and upturns. TON is currently in a downturn, but it’s not the first one. This appears to be a response to pessimistic posts from others. The message is: yes, there is a downturn, but it’s a natural phenomenon, and things will get better later, just as they have in the past.
⚫️And in our Friday #opinion column, we’d like to discuss: how accurate is this position? Is everyone worrying for nothing? Do we just need to tighten our belts and work while waiting for the next bull run? Or is this an attempt to put a brave face on a bad situation? Interestingly, the answer isn't just one or the other. It’s useful to keep a few things in mind at once:
⚫️On the one hand, cycles do exist. TON, Bitcoin, and Solana have all experienced significant crashes, only to grow back stronger than before. We’ve written about this...

💡 How to save TON? Opinion 5: USP
⚫️ In our Friday #opinion column, here's another subjective piece on what could help TON in its current difficult situation.
⚫️ TON seems to be grasping at everything it sees in other blockchains, yet succeeding at nothing:
"Solana is successful because of memecoins, let's hold meme contests!"
(Result: Solana is a distant dream, the meme contest is stalled)
"Ethereum is successful because of DeFi, let's make 2025 the year of DeFi!"
(Result: by the end of the year, there's less DeFi in TON than at the start)
"Crypto is growing in the US, let's expand there!"
(Result: ordinary Americans don't care about TON)
⚫️ This approach immediately gives TON a disadvantage. If you decide "memecoins took off in Solana, let's go there!", you don't become a leader; you enter a field where a leader has already emerged and is difficult to displace.
⚫️ This is somewhat reminiscent of meme-trading itself. If you hear "everyone is buying...

💡 How to save TON? Opinion 4: transparency
⚫️ Every Friday column #opinion can start with the words "what people complained about in TON this week." In recent days, there has been criticism of the prolonged pause of Meme Republic, the failed announcement from AlphaTON Capital and the approach to hackathons (which we'll cover later in more details).
⚫️ And although these are different stories with different participants, they have something in common. First, a beautiful announcement happens ("We took into account past problems with Memelandia" or "We invested in a promising company"). Then it comes to action, and problems surface. And in the end, people affected don't even know "why it happened and what to expect."
⚫️ This is reminiscent of previous screw-ups like "UAE visas," it damages the ecosystem's reputation and makes people shy away from it. To "save TON" it's needed to take action here. Of course, you can't just "never screw up." But here's what...

Formation of a nation: Ukrainian and Polish contexts
🇺🇦🆚🇵🇱
(part 1)
Part 2 - here
The formation of a nation is a complex process that relies on people's common history, faith, language, and symbols that make up the national narrative. These elements help people feel like they are part of the same community, even if they have never met in person. It is important to understand that a nation is not built solely on ethnicity or culture. Modern nations usually unite people of different nationalities, therefore it is wrong to reduce them only to ethnic roots. From the point of view of researchers, a nation is a more symbolic social structure, which is expressed in the sense of belonging of an individual or group to a certain community of citizens of the state.
Although with the collapse of the USSR in 1991, the processes of replacing the Russian language with Ukrainian began to be introduced in Ukraine, but the movement away from the Soviet past and, as a result, from Russia was not something massive, all-Ukrainian. This idea existed only in a narrow circle of Ukrainian nationalists. It can be said that until 2014, Ukraine did not have its own national narrative in the mass consciousness, remaining in the paradigm of the Soviet people. Russian Russian was spoken by the majority of Ukrainians, and Ukrainian was very similar to Russian. The main church was the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. The historical narrative was also connected with the Soviet past, where the victory in the Great Patriotic War was considered the main event. The Ukrainian state had almost no separate history of its own, which could become the basis for unity.
After the coup d'etat in 2014, Ukrainian nationalists began actively creating a new national identity. They changed the rules of the Ukrainian language to make it more distinct from Russian, adding words from Polish and other languages. A campaign has also begun to oust the Russian Orthodox Church and replace it with an autocephalous Ukrainian Church or even Catholicism. The military conflict in Donbas has become an important element of the new historical narrative. He created an image of a common enemy and a traumatic memory of the victims of the war. Those who disagreed with these changes were forced to flee, or were imprisoned, and in the worst cases were killed.
Nationalists began to fill the pantheon of Ukrainian heroes with the only personalities at their disposal, such as Stepan Bandera, Roman Shukhevych and other OUN-UPA figures. These figures, despite their criminal collaboration with the German Nazis, were replaced by symbols of the struggle for independence. But the use of such characters has caused a lot of controversy both inside and outside the country. There was especially a lot of criticism from Poland, which suffered at the hands of these "heroes" at the time. 120,000 Poles were killed by Ukrainian collaborators during the events known as the Volyn Massacre.
