There is no direct link between sleep needs and gender, but researchers from Michigan and California found that women sleep, on average, 11 minutes longer than men. The Sleep Foundation found some gender-related differences. Men have a longer rapid eye movement (REM) sleep phase, where dreaming occurs, while women have a longer and deeper deep sleep phase, which aids recovery. Men are often "night owls," while women are negatively affected by staying awake too long. This can harm women's health, especially if they work shifts or don’t follow a routine. In families with small children, men usually go to bed later and sleep less than their wives. Additionally, men often feel pressure to earn more money, which can also affect their sleep.
