A recent study by MIT and the University of Edinburgh found that lawyers understand contracts written in plain English better than those in legalese. When given the choice, they preferred plain language contracts and thought clients would prefer them too. So why does legalese still exist? The study suggests that many lawyers stick to old templates filled with complicated language because it’s easier than writing new, clear contracts. This leads to a cycle of confusing legal language.
