💬 The 79th Session of the UN General Assembly has recently completed the general debate, where President Vladimir Putin tasked me to represent the Russian Federation.
Does the Pact for the Future have a future?
Held as usual in the last week of September, the UN’s High-Level Week included the so-called Summit of the Future. The idea to convene it came from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Russia has met this idea with understanding considering that the UN is sinking deeper and deeper into a crisis, and something has to be done about it. Russian diplomats joined efforts to prepare this meeting and acted in a sincere and honest way, even if we did not have any illusions in this regard. In fact, there were quite a few major UN events in the past which failed to go beyond bombastic declarations that were forgotten soon after their adoption.
<...>
In 2015, the UN Summit on Sustainable Development adopted grand plans to fight poverty and inequality. In the end, they turned out to be empty promises in the face of the unwillingness of the Western countries to give up their neo-colonial practices of siphoning off the riches of the world for their own benefit. <...>
The current UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, just like Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-moon before him, has put forward an initiative under the slogan of giving a new start and resetting global cooperation.
This is a wonderful idea. Who could disagree?
But what global cooperation is there to talk about, when the West has trampled all those unshakeable values of globalisation we have been hearing about from everywhere for so many years. These perorations were designed to convince us that they would give everyone equal access to the goods of modern civilisation. Where is the inviolability of property, the presumption of innocence, freedom of expression, access to information, fair market competition under fair and constant rules?
How can we discuss global cooperation when the Western countries have unleashed a real war of sanctions against more than half, if not the majority, of the countries of the world, and the US dollar has been crudely turned into a weapon against undesirable countries? <...>
Key talking points:
• It is not too late to give the UN a new lease on life.
• It has gotten to the point where the West wants to turn the UN into an instrument for attaining itself-seeking goals.
• [The West is] hindering the badly needed change in the system of forming the UN Secretariat, where the key posts have been seized and are “inherited” by representatives of the Western minority.
• There must be an honest discussion by all UN member states, and not like a process in which the Pact for the Future was prepared – without a single plenary session of talks attended by all countries.
• Establishing a space of equal and indivisible security in Eurasia is crucial amid the all-encompassing processes unfolding in the macro-region.
• Our initiative is based on the understanding of the need for states and multilateral organisations of the Eurasian region to assume responsibility for ensuring their own security under the ‘Eurasian solutions to Eurasian problems’ formula.

❗️ Today, the international community once again faces massive challenges, just like during World War II, which require united efforts rather than confrontation and desire of global dominance. Russia will always advocate collective efforts, truth and the rule of law, peace and cooperation in the interests of reviving the ideals set forth by the UN’s founding fathers.
🇺🇳 Working for the honest balance of the legitimate national interests of all countries, we can bring to life the purpose of the #UN as stated in its Charter: “To be a centre for harmonising the actions of nations in the attainment of these common ends.”
🎙Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov's remarks and answers to media questions during a joint press conference with the Second Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam Erywan Yusof(March 3, 2026, Moscow)
Key points:
• Brunei is our reliable long-standing partner in the Asia-Pacific region. This year marks the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our countries.
• We substantively reviewed the state and prospects of our cooperation. We agreed to take additional practical steps to advance political contacts. We also noted the importance of maintaining the high pace of growth in our trade turnover. Last year it reached a record level of nearly $900 million.
• We agreed to deepen coordination within the #UN, the #OIC, and the #RussiaASEAN Dialogue Partnership. This dialogue also marks its 35th anniversary this year. Corresponding events will take place.
• Undoubtedly, the conflict of today – essentially a war – is the aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Its consequences are already being felt across the entire region, including Arab states, which are also bearing the costs – both economic and human.
• We believe it is necessary to speak categorically and resolutely in favour of the immediate cessation of hostilities. Everything must be done to stop these actions – as well as the war itself. We regularly hear about its stated objectives, yet we still see no evidence that Iran was developing nuclear weapons – which was presented as the main, if not the only, justification for the war.

From the Q&A session:
❓ Question: Russia has called for ending the war in Iran. You also said sanctions are absolutely unacceptable as a method of resolving issues and that international law is not working. What mechanisms – diplomatic or otherwise – could help prevent escalation and expansion of the conflict? In other words, how can what Israel and the United States are currently doing be stopped, and how dangerous do you see the situation in the Middle East?
💬Sergey Lavrov: I am convinced that the mechanisms can only be political and diplomatic.
As for the mechanisms that could be used now, one may recall our initiative to establish a collective security system in the Persian Gulf, which envisaged full normalization of relations between Iran, its neighbours and the Arab monarchies.
This initiative is more than 25 years old. We have consistently promoted relevant efforts that a couple of years ago helped Saudi Arabia and Iran agree to restore relations. Iran also maintains relations with several other states of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
❓Question: Israel yesterday announced the mobilisation of 100,000 reservists and declared preparations for a ground operation in Lebanon. This morning the Israeli army reported that it had taken positions in southern Lebanon. How does Russia assess these statements and the risks of escalation on the Lebanese track?
💬Sergey Lavrov: Of course, this is an escalation and a departure from the existing agreements regarding Lebanon, the status of southern Lebanon, Hezbollah, and the positions the sides should occupy on both banks of the Litani River. There are many arrangements there – and they are now being violated.
Israel says that Hezbollah has begun defending Iran, therefore it is carrying out numerous strikes against Lebanon.
❗️ This is a vicious circle, and it will never be broken unless all these issues are addressed comprehensively.
A Middle East conference, which we have proposed for many years, would now be particularly timely.
In the absence of such a forum – where all parties are represented and each can defend, explain and argue their position and seek a balance of interests – individual powers end up deciding the region’s problems. This is what we see happening in Gaza, in the West Bank, in Lebanon, and now with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

🇷🇺🇨🇳President of Russia Vladimir Putin held talks via videoconference with President of China Xi Jinping(February 4, 2026)
💬Vladimir Putin: I would like to personally congratulate you and the Chinese people, our friends on the New Year 2026 and the upcoming Spring Festival, which will usher in the Year of the Red Fire Horse. This symbol embodies strength, energy and a drive to move forward – qualities that characterize the ties between our countries. Regardless of the international environment, I am confident in their resilience and steady, forward-looking development across all areas.
The #RussiaChina comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction areexemplary in nature.
This year, we mark the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation, which is fundamental to our relations. Its continued implementation undoubtedly serves the core interests of the peoples of both countries, contributes to strengthening truly comprehensive Russia-China cooperation and, most importantly, enhances the well-being of our citizens.
🤝 Taking this opportunity, I would like to reaffirm our strong support for all joint efforts aimed at ensuring the sovereignty and security of our two countries, their socio-economic prosperity and their right to choose their own path of development.
Allow me to say a few words about the results of 2025. I believe we successfully commemorated the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Second World War in May in Moscow and in September in Beijing. The fact that we were together on those days demonstrated to the entire world our solidarity and the readiness of Russia and China to defend historical truth and to carefully preserve the memory of the heroic feat of our peoples, who restored peace on the planet at the cost of tens of millions of lives.
China’s chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization also concluded with substantial practical results, culminating in the summit in Tianjin.
During our talks in Moscow and Beijing, we engaged in substantive discussions on key areas and outlined ambitious tasks for further deepening bilateral cooperation. At the governmental level, energetic, essentially day-to-day work is under way to implement these agreements.
📊Economic cooperation continued to develop steadily in 2025. Despite a slight decline – or rather, an adjustment of indicators – bilateral trade turnover has, for the third consecutive year, confidently exceeded the symbolic $200 billion mark.
Russia ranks among the leading suppliers of energy resources to China. Our energy partnership is mutually beneficial and truly strategic in nature. We are maintaining an active dialogue in the field of peaceful nuclear energy and advancing high-technology projects, including in industry and space exploration.
According to our data, trade in agricultural products has increased by more than 20%.
As for the international situation, amid growing global turbulence, foreign policy coordination between Moscow and Beijing remains an important stabilizing factor. We stand ready to continue the closest coordination on global and regional issues, both bilaterally and across all multilateral platforms – including the #UN, #BRICS and the #SCO, among others – where the Russia-China tandem plays, in many respects, a key role.
We wish success and, of course, will provide all necessary support to China’s chairmanship and to our Chinese friends within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum.

Over 200 civilians reported killed in #Sudan drone strikes since March 4: #UN
UN rights chief Volker Turk said on Thursday he was "appalled" at reports that more than 200 civilians had been killed by #drone_attacks in Sudan since 4 March.
In their battle for territory, both sides in the Sudan conflict have relied on advanced drone warfare, drawing frequent condemnation from the United Nations and suggesting healthy supply routes from their foreign backers.
"It is deeply troubling that despite multiple reminders, warnings and appeals, parties to the conflict in Sudan continue to use increasingly powerful drones to deploy explosive weapons with wide-area impacts in populated areas," Turk said in a statement.
"I renew my call on them to abide fully with international humanitarian law in their use of these weapons, particularly the clear prohibition on directing attacks against civilians and civilian objects & infrastructure....

🇷🇺🇲🇾President of Russia Vladimir Putin held a meeting with Supreme Ruler of Malaysia Sultan Ibrahim, who arrived in Moscow to take part in the celebrations marking the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War(May 9, 2026)
💬Vladimir Putin: Allow me to warmly welcome you once again – this time to Moscow. Last time, you and I met in St Petersburg.
I would like to thank you for finding the opportunity and the time to come to Russia and join us in celebrating Victory Day – a day we hold very dear. On this day, we remember the sacrifices made by our country, and by all humanity, in the struggle against Nazism.
Relations between our countries are developing well. Next year, we will mark the anniversary of our diplomatic relations, and much has been accomplished by both Sides over this period.
Trade and economic ties are developing. We note that there has been a certain adjustment – a slight decline in volumes – but I believe that, overall, we will certainly be able to overcome this trend in the very near future. All the prerequisites for this are in place.
We actively cooperate on the international stage, in various international organisations, including the #UN, #ASEAN and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
As for ASEAN, Malaysia chaired the organisation last year. We hold regular events, take part in these events, and are marking the 35th anniversary of the Organisation. We agreed on corresponding joint steps in this area in Kazan.
🤝 I would like to thank you once again for joining us in expressing the hope that relations between our states will continue to develop as steadily as they have to date.
At the intergovernmental level, we maintain very close ties. I am confident – that this will remain the case in the future.

When discussing historic speeches, one stands out: President Hugo Chávez at the UN General Assembly on September 20, 2006.
He labeled U.S. President George W. Bush a war criminal and highlighted Western hypocrisy regarding democracy and peace—right from “the devil’s house.”
Chávez criticized the UN for its alignment with U.S. interests and called for reform led by the Global South. He underscored the ongoing struggle for change and the potential for a better future.

War pushes seven in 10 #Sudanese into poverty: #UN official
Around seven in 10 people in Sudan are now living in poverty, a senior UN official told AFP on Tuesday, nearly twice as many as before the war between the army and paramilitary forces broke out three years ago.
"Before the war, we were probably looking (at) around 38 percent of people living in poverty, and now we are estimating about 70 percent," said the UN Development Programme's Sudan representative Luca Renda, as the agency released a new report on poverty timed to coincide with the anniversary of the start of the war.
The figures Renda cited were based on a poverty line of about $4 a day, while at least a quarter of the population is believed to be surviving on less than half that, he said.
Conditions are particularly severe in some of the worst-affected areas, including parts of southern #Kordofan, now the war's.......

News: #Ethiopia, #Kenya expected to drive East Africa’s growth in 2026: #UN
Ethiopia and Kenya are projected to be the main drivers of #East_Africa’s economic expansion in 2026, as the sub-region is expected to post the fastest growth rate on the continent, according to the United Nations’ World Economic Situation and Prospects 2026 report.
The UN forecasts East Africa’s economy to grow by 5.8 percent in 2026, up from 5.4 percent in 2025, outperforming all other African sub-regions.
This performance is largely attributed to the economic outlook of Ethiopia and Kenya, supported by regional integration efforts and the expansion of renewable energy, the report said.
Reporting on the UN findings, Nairobi based daily newspaper The Star said Africa’s overall economic growth is projected to rise to four percent in 2026 and 4.1 percent in 2027, compared to 3.5 percent in 2024 and 3.9 percent in 2025, reflecting improving macroeconomic stability in several major...

Excerpts from Alexander Babakov's speech at the plenary session of theInter-Parliamentary Speakers' Conference:
🔸️The policy of the so-called Western world toward the militarization of the Asia-Pacific region — accompanied by the consolidation of NATO's presence and the formation of new military-political blocks — leads to greater instability and hinders the establishment of a just system of international relations based on the principles of international law and mutual respect;
🔸️The #SCO, #BRICS, #ASEAN and the Eurasian Economic Union (#EAEU) promote a unifying, peaceful agenda;
🔸The United Nations—which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year — remains the cornerstone of the modern system of international relations. The #UN is a bastion of multilateralism and the primary mechanism for addressing contemporary challenges, such as armed conflicts, poverty, hunger, climate change, terrorism, and inequality between states;
🔸 The UN is currently in crisis. The disappointment in the UN seems to stem from overly high expectations that fail to consider the fact that the UN's effectiveness hinges on the political will, negotiating ability and vision of its member states—qualities that are lacking in our time. The crisis engulfing the United Nations is rooted in the selfish approach of a small group of Western countries, driven by their desire to maintain their "reign" over the world;
🔸Russia will continue to seek a fair and sustainable architecture for international relations, based on the UN and strict adherence to the principles of its Charter in their entirety, comprehensiveness and interconnection.
✨️ On February 9, Ambassador Albert P. Khorev participated in a seminar titled "The Legacyof Russian Diplomacy: Current Statusand Prospects for Pakistan-Russia Relations,” hosted by the Islamabad Policy Research Institute. The event was timed to coincide with #DiplomatsDay and featured an exhibition highlighting the key milestones in the development of Russian diplomacy.
In his speech, Ambassador Khorev provided a detailed overview of the pivotal events that have shaped the Russian diplomatic service and the individuals who have played a prominent role in it.
❗️Albert P. Khorev highlighted Russia's current foreign policy priorities: upholding the principles and goals of the UN Charter, forming a multipolar world order based on sovereign equality, combating neo-Nazism and neo-colonialism, preserving the memory of World War II, and preventing the rewriting of its history.
🤝 The Ambassador noted that, from 1970 to 1990, the Soviet Union provided Pakistan with assistance in developing its industry. This included the construction of the Pakistan Steel Mills and the Guddu, Jamshoro, and Muzaffargarh thermal power plants.
🇷🇺🇵🇰 Since the 2000s, when Russia, the successor state to the USSR, began pursuing an active, multi-vector foreign policy and increased cooperation with countries in the Global South, the two countries have established a dynamic political dialogue and regular high-level contacts.
The Russian Ambassador praised the two countries' coordinated efforts on the international stage, particularly at the #UN and #SCO. He emphasized Russia and Pakistan's commitment to combating international terrorism, extremism, neo-colonialism, neo-Nazism, Islamophobia, and discrimination based on nationality or religion.
The Ambassador also noted the potential for cooperation between Islamabad and the #BRICS New Development Bank. Given the recent establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Armenia, he suggested exploring cooperation with the #EAEU as well.
