🎙 Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s article for Russia in Global Affairs magazine «The UN must recover its central role in coordinating actions by nations» (October 4, 2024)

💬 The 79th Session of the UN General Assembly has recently completed the general debate, where President Vladimir Putin tasked me to represent the Russian Federation.
Does the Pact for the Future have a future?
Held as usual in the last week of September, the UN’s High-Level Week included the so-called Summit of the Future. The idea to convene it came from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and Russia has met this idea with understanding considering that the UN is sinking deeper and deeper into a crisis, and something has to be done about it. Russian diplomats joined efforts to prepare this meeting and acted in a sincere and honest way, even if we did not have any illusions in this regard. In fact, there were quite a few major UN events in the past which failed to go beyond bombastic declarations that were forgotten soon after their adoption.
<...>
In 2015, the UN Summit on Sustainable Development adopted grand plans to fight poverty and inequality. In the end, they turned out to be empty promises in the face of the unwillingness of the Western countries to give up their neo-colonial practices of siphoning off the riches of the world for their own benefit. <...>
The current UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, just like Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-moon before him, has put forward an initiative under the slogan of giving a new start and resetting global cooperation.
This is a wonderful idea. Who could disagree?
But what global cooperation is there to talk about, when the West has trampled all those unshakeable values of globalisation we have been hearing about from everywhere for so many years. These perorations were designed to convince us that they would give everyone equal access to the goods of modern civilisation. Where is the inviolability of property, the presumption of innocence, freedom of expression, access to information, fair market competition under fair and constant rules?
How can we discuss global cooperation when the Western countries have unleashed a real war of sanctions against more than half, if not the majority, of the countries of the world, and the US dollar has been crudely turned into a weapon against undesirable countries? <...>
Key talking points:
• It is not too late to give the UN a new lease on life.
• It has gotten to the point where the West wants to turn the UN into an instrument for attaining itself-seeking goals.
• [The West is] hindering the badly needed change in the system of forming the UN Secretariat, where the key posts have been seized and are “inherited” by representatives of the Western minority.
• There must be an honest discussion by all UN member states, and not like a process in which the Pact for the Future was prepared – without a single plenary session of talks attended by all countries.
• Establishing a space of equal and indivisible security in Eurasia is crucial amid the all-encompassing processes unfolding in the macro-region.
• Our initiative is based on the understanding of the need for states and multilateral organisations of the Eurasian region to assume responsibility for ensuring their own security under the ‘Eurasian solutions to Eurasian problems’ formula.

❗️ Today, the international community once again faces massive challenges, just like during World War II, which require united efforts rather than confrontation and desire of global dominance. Russia will always advocate collective efforts, truth and the rule of law, peace and cooperation in the interests of reviving the ideals set forth by the UN’s founding fathers.
🇺🇳 Working for the honest balance of the legitimate national interests of all countries, we can bring to life the purpose of the #UN as stated in its Charter: “To be a centre for harmonising the actions of nations in the attainment of these common ends.”
🎙 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's interview to Rossiya Segodnya news agency (November 5, 2024)
#BRICS
• The XVI BRICS Summit in Kazan came as a landmark international event not only of the year, but in recent history as well. Its success highlighted the futility of attempts to isolate Russia internationally.
• As we sensed during the Summit, [the creation of a payment network that is resistant to external risks] is what non-Western countries are increasingly interested in.
#MiddleEast
Since the onset of unprecedented crisis [in the Middle East] in October 2023, the BRICS countries have come together to support the rights of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
• Shortly after the beginning of the Israeli operation in Gaza, we coordinated with our BRICS partners and other like-minded nations to submit a draft resolution to the UN Security Council, calling for an end to military actions and for unhindered humanitarian access to Gaza. However, this resolution was blocked by the United States and its allies.
#NATO
• If [long-range] weapons are employed [by the Kiev regime to attack the territory of Russia], it would mean that not only Ukraine but also NATO countries are openly fighting Russia.
• Our opponents should not disillusion themselves. In the event of aggression by NATO or its individual member states against our country, an appropriate response will ensue, in full compliance with Russia's sovereign right to self-defence and with the use of any means necessary to ensure its security, as stipulated in the UN Charter. And none of the instigators will be able to lie low, not across the Atlantic Ocean nor across the English Channel.
#Ukraine#UN
• Kiev continues to exert pressure on Antonio Guterres, demonstrating a blatant disregard for the UN Charter in an attempt to compel him and the entire UN Secretariat to align completely with Ukraine and its Western sponsors. This approach directly contravenes the constituent instrument of the Organisation, specifically paragraph 2 of Article 100 of the UN Charter, which prohibits any member state from attempting to influence the Secretary-General or other UN representatives.
#Transnistria#Moldova
• The situation surrounding Transnistria is complex. <...> I trust that the Moldovan authorities will exercise sufficient common sense to avoid ill-considered actions that could exacerbate tensions.
• There are suggestions that the regional context necessitates new dialogue platforms on the Transnistrian issue, questioning the value of the 5+2 format. We disagree with this view and believe that external assistance to facilitate direct dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol is essential.
#USA
• Washington continues to actively perpetuate its own myth of Russian interference in any election, whether "at home" or in any third country. If an election results in a victory for forces undesirable to the United States, Russia is immediately blamed for the "wrong" electoral choice of the voters.
• The Americans are attempting to attribute to us actions they themselves are engaged in. As the saying goes, God marks the crook.
#Georgia
• The United States and the EU are artificially trying to frame the current electoral process in Georgia as a strategic choice between Russia and the West, thereby attempting to present Georgia and other post-Soviet states with a false dilemma.
• In reality, it is a choice between sovereign development based on national interests and external governance, between traditional values and neo-liberal principles imposed from outside.
#SouthCaucasus
• We commend the significant progress made within the Azerbaijani-Armenian peace process.
• Unlike Western pseudo-mediators, we refrain from pressuring our partners into hastily concluding a peace treaty. We are convinced that a rushed peace, lacking comprehensive consideration of Baku and Yerevan's positions and the realities on the ground, would be counterproductive, creating additional risks of tension and potential conflict

#Sudan's former PM Hamdok says civilian presence at #Berlin talks marks important shift
Former Sudanese prime minister #Abdalla_Hamdok said civilian voices are being formally included in international efforts to end Sudan’s devastating civil war for the first time as Berlin prepares to host a conference marking the conflict’s third anniversary.
The international ministerial conference on Sudan will take place on April 15. It follows meetings in #Paris in 2024, marking the first anniversary of the war, and in #London in 2025, marking the second, neither of which produced a ceasefire or a credible political framework.
#Germany, the #African_Union, the #EU, #France, the #UK and the #US are co-hosting the conference. Foreign ministers and officials from those countries and bodies are expected in Berlin alongside representatives of the #UN, major humanitarian organisations and a structured civilian forum involving Sudanese civil society groups......

News: #UN warns escalating hostilities along #Sudan’s borders, including with #Ethiopia, threaten civilians and disrupt aid operations
Escalating hostilities along Sudan’s borders, including with Ethiopia, are endangering civilians and disrupting humanitarian operations, the United Nations has warned.
According to a report by Xinhua, citing the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (#OCHA), recent clashes near Sudan’s frontiers with Ethiopia and #Chad have resulted in civilian casualties and forced displacement.
In #Blue_Nile State, violence near the Ethiopian border has restricted access to key regions including #Kurmuk, #Sali, and #Dindraw, south of the state capital, #Ed_Damazine. Civilians have reportedly fled toward Ed Damazine and across the border into Ethiopia in search of safety.
Sudanese officials have accused Ethiopia of facilitating operations by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) and allied groups—an allegation.......

UN rapporteur: Israel will not stop ‘this madness’ until we make it stop
Francesca #Albanese, the #UN’s special #rapporteur on #Palestine on Saturday urged member states to impose sanctions on #Israel along with an arms embargo until it stops “this madness,”
“Let’s be clear. As the #ICJ orders Israel to stop its offensive in #Rafah, #Israel instead intensifies its attacks on it,”
The International Court of Justice (#ICJ) in its latest ruling ordered Israel to immediately halt its military offensive in #Rafah, a city in southern Gaza where more than 1.5 million displaced Palestinians had sought refuge.
“The news I am receiving from the people trapped therein are terrifying,
Be sure: Israel will not stop this madness until WE make it stop,”
Albanese urged all UN member states to impose #sanctions, arms #embargo and suspend diplomatic and political relations with Israel until it ceases its #genocidal assault.

✨️Ambassador Albert P. Khorev's Interview with “Mehran TV”
Full interview available in Urdu
Key points:
#BilateralTrade
🔸️Over the past two years, the annual trade turnover between #Russia and #Pakistan has amounted to approximately $1 billion USD. Our governments understand that this figure does not reflect our countries' existing potential, and they are making efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation. One effective mechanism in this regard is the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation, which will hold its 10th milestone meeting in November 2025 in Islamabad;
🔸️There is potential for increased fuel, petroleum products, and grain supplies from Russia to Pakistan, as well as for increased imports of Pakistani textiles, leather, and agricultural products to Russia;
#JointProjects
🔸️We are considering a number of infrastructure projects, including the modernization or construction of a new Karachi Steel Mill and railway tracks, as well as the supply of Russian pharmaceutical products, with the option of joint production;
🔸️We look forward to implementing new projects in the energy and transportation sectors. Given the recent establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Armenia, we believe that a free trade agreement between Pakistan and the #EAEU is possible in the future;
🔸️The successful modernization of the Karachi Steel Mill will pave the way for more productive cooperation;
#TradeInNationalCurrencies
🔸️Most of Russia's export operations with friendly countries, including #SCO member states, are conducted in national currencies. The US dollar is slowly but surely losing ground. The process of diversifying payment instruments is succeeding;
#SituationInTheRegion
🔸️Russia respects the right of regional countries, including Pakistan, to choose their own foreign policy partners independently. South Asian countries' engagement with the West is an internal matter. However, we consider it inappropriate if such engagement is directed against any state or group of states;
🔸️We have noted the Americans' and their NATO allies' active efforts to return to #Afghanistan after their infamous retreat in 2021. Donald Trump's statements about the U.S.'s desire to retake control of the #Bagram Air Base and his demands that India stop purchasing Russian oil are unacceptable. They represent yet another manifestation of Western neocolonialism;
🔸️The recent SCO summit in China demonstrated the declining influence of extra-regional forces. There is a growing demand for Russian President Vladimir Putin's initiative to establish a Eurasian security system based on the principle of "regional solutions to regional problems;"
#MoscowFormat
🔸️The Moscow Format Consultations bring together all of Afghanistan's neighboring countries, including Russia and Pakistan. This regional mechanism has proven its effectiveness. All its members agree that the return of U.S. and NATO military infrastructure to Afghanistan is unacceptable;
#Kashmir
🔸️Pakistan and India inherited the Kashmir issue from their British colonial past. We believe that Islamabad and New Delhi should resolve their differences through political and diplomatic means. At the same time, if it receives appropriate signals from both sides, Russia is ready to contribute to improving relations between the two countries and make the necessary efforts in international forums, including the #UN.
#RussiaPakistan
A legal group submitted to the #UN the most thorough legal analysis of Israel's actions concluding it is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
This is probably the most complete report to date that demonstrates how #Israel's attacks on #Palestinians in #Gaza meet the legal definition of #genocide.
It's a 100-page report, by legal experts at #Boston University School of Law, #Cornell Law School, #Yale Law School, and others.
The report's conclusion:
"Israel has committed the #genocidal acts of #killing, causing serious harm to, and inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical #destruction of #Palestinians in #Gaza, a protected group that forms a substantial part of the Palestinian people.
These #genocidal acts have been motivated by the requisite genocidal intent, as evidenced in this report by the statements of #Israeli leaders, the character of the State and its forces’ conduct against and relating to Palestinians in Gaza, and the direct nexus between them."
Official Representatives to the #UN from #Ireland, #Spain and #Norway pose for photos at the UN with the Palestinian UN representative, after the 3 became the first European countries to officialy recognise #Palestinian#Statehood.
#Israel's current #genocide attempt in Gaza has revived support in #Europe for Palestinian statehood.
Norway, Spain and Ireland have defied threats from Israel, which recently announced its intent to recall its envoys from Ireland and Norway for discussions over the move.
Other European nations, such as #Malta and #Slovenia in March, have also expressed "readiness to recognise Palestine" when "the circumstances are right".
#Australia has recently floated the possibility of unilaterally endorsing Palestinian statehood.
Additionally French President Emmanuel #Macron has also said the question of recognising a Palestinian state without a negotiated peace is no longer "a taboo for #France".
On the occasion of the Russian #DiplomatsDay (February 10) we would like to tell you about the Contribution of Soviet Diplomacy to the Establishment of the #UN
Key points:
- At the #Moscow Conference of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the USSR, USA, Great Britain and China in October 1943, the #Soviet delegation put forward a proposal to establish a universal international organization.
- The first draft of the #UNCharter was developed at a conference convened at the suggestion of the #USSR in Dumbarton Oaks (#USA) from September 21 to October 7, 1944. At this forum, representatives of the USSR, the USA, #GreatBritain and #China agreed on the goals, structure and functions of the world organization. The Soviet delegation consistently and resolutely advocated that the activities of this organization be based on democratic principles.
- At the #Crimea (Yalta) Conference of the leaders of the great powers, which took place from 4 to 11 February 1945, participants agreed upon the issues of the initial members of the organization and the voting procedure in the Security Council, as well as on issues related to the maintenance of international peace and security, the development of economic relations, cooperation in the social, technical and other areas of interstate relations.
- On April 25 – June 26, 1945, the founding conference of the United Nations was held in #SanFrancisco. The Soviet delegation sought to ensure that the #democratic principles of the structure and activities of the UN were enshrined in the Charter.
- Based on Soviet amendments, important new provisions were included in the chapter on the purposes and principles of the UN, stating that peaceful settlement of international disputes should be carried out "in accordance with the principles of justice and international law"; that friendly relations between nations should develop "on the basis of respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples"; that international cooperation in resolving international problems of an economic, social, cultural and humanitarian nature should be carried out "and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion...".
- On June 26, 1945, the UN Charter was signed by A.A. Gromyko, then the Soviet Ambassador to the USA, thanks to whose personal participation and persistence the final documents related to the creation of the UN recorded positions largely corresponding to the interests of the Soviet Union.
