In its latest overview as of 31 March 2026, UNHCR reported that a total of 68,750 Ethiopian refugees and asylum seekers are currently in Sudan, representing about 8% of the country’s overall refugee population, which stands at more than 862,000.
Of these, 12,675 Ethiopian refugees—about 18%—are hosted in Blue Nile state, primarily in Wad Al Mahi Camp. The majority, 44,386 (65%), reside in Gedaref state, while smaller numbers are found in Red Sea state (3,135) & Khartoum (322).

#Ethiopia: Residents say over 80 houses burned in attack by government security forces in #Metekel Zone
Residents told Addis Standard that regional special police and district militias have forcibly displaced residents from several kebeles in #Dibate District, #Metekel Zone of the #Benishangul-Gumuz Region, and burned their homes and property.
A resident of Chati Kebele in Dibate District, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said that about a month ago government officials issued an order stating that residents must vacate the area because authorities wanted to “take action against the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA),” which the government refers to as “Shene.”

New report cites evidence of alleged military assistance to RSF from #Ethiopian base, raising regional security concerns
A new report by the #Yale School of Public Health’s Humanitarian Research Lab (#HRL) says it has found “high confidence” evidence of activity consistent with military assistance by Ethiopia to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (#RSF), raising concerns about escalating regional insecurity.
The report, published on 8 April, is based on satellite imagery and open-source data collected between late December 2025 and late March 2026.
It concludes that such activity is taking place at an Ethiopian National Defense Force (#ENDF) base in #Asosa town, in Ethiopia’s #Benishangul-Gumuz region.
HRL says its assessment is based on five key indicators observed at the Asosa base and not found at 14 other ENDF installations reviewed for comparison.
