#dev

#US judge temporarily blocks end of #Ethiopians' deportation protections A federal judge on Friday temporarily blocked U.S. President Donald Trump's administration from ending protections from deportation that had been granted to thousands of Ethiopians living in the United States. U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston said he would issue an order delaying the February 13 effective date of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's termination of the Temporary Protected Status granted to over 5,000 Ethiopians in order to provide more time for a legal challenge to be heard. Murphy, who was appointed by Democratic President Joe Biden, during a virtual hearing said an order administratively staying the effective date would allow DHS time to produce records detailing how it made its decision so he can then consider whether to block the agency's action for even longer. https://www.reuters.com/world/us-judge-temporarily-blocks-end-ethiopians-deportation-protections-2026-01-30/

News: #US faces lawsuit over ending #Ethiopians’ deportation protection, putting over 5,000 at risk Immigrant rights advocates have filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block the #Trump administration from ending Temporary Protected Status (#TPS) for thousands of Ethiopians living in the United States, a move they say would put more than 5,000 people at risk of deportation and loss of work authorization, according to Reuters. The lawsuit, filed Thursday in #Boston federal court by three Ethiopian nationals and the non-profit African Communities Together, challenges the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) decision to terminate Ethiopia’s TPS designation effective February 13, 2026. The plaintiffs argue that DHS Secretary Kristi Noem ended the protections with only 60 days’ notice despite ongoing humanitarian and security challenges in Ethiopia, including continued conflict in .... https://web.facebook.com/AddisstandardEng/posts/pfbid0dT92xRt89mT8VprD3T91j4v2kps3MSX9eC5wrunWEhmuN6HgiUff51DBFCR2CmGLl

News: #US judge blocks termination of legal protections for #Ethiopians under Temporary Protected Status A U.S. federal judge has halted an effort by the administration of Donald #Trump to end temporary legal protections for more than 5,000 Ethiopians living in the United States, according to a report by Reuters. In a ruling issued on April 8 in Boston, Brian Murphy blocked the Department of Homeland Security (#DHS) from terminating Temporary Protected Status (#TPS) for Ethiopians, marking a setback for the administration’s broader push to scale back such protections. TPS is granted under U.S. law to nationals of countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions, allowing eligible individuals to live and work in the United States without fear of deportation. According to Reuters, Judge Murphy concluded that DHS had disregarded statutory procedures set by Congress and offered a “pretextual” justification for ending Read more: https://addisstandard.com/?p=56440

News: EPRP calls for nationwide protest on May 8 amid concerns over electoral conditions The Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (#EPRP) has called for a nationwide peaceful protest to be held on May 8, 2026, citing what it described as the absence of “enabling conditions” for a credible election in #Ethiopia. In a statement sent to Addis Standard today, the party said the planned demonstrations will take place in several major cities, including #Addis_Abeba, #Mekelle, #Bahir_Dar, #Gondar, #Hawassa, #Adama, and #Ambo, urging #Ethiopians to join what it described as a peaceful effort to demand political reforms. The EPRP said it supports the transfer of power through elections but argued that current conditions do not allow for a “free, fair, and credible” vote.
