#Ethiopia | ‘The 21st Century #Adwa’: Barbados’ PM Mia Mottley on GERD and African Agency
In a one-on-one interview with a comedian and TV host Trevor Noah last week, Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley offered a passionate endorsement of Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), describing the project as “revolutionary” and placing it within Africa’s enduring energy crisis. Noting that Ethiopia’s population exceeds 100 million while just over half have access to electricity, Mottley framed GERD as a strategic response to a continent-wide development constraint.
She argued that what elevates GERD beyond infrastructure is how it was built. After international lenders declined to finance the project, Ethiopia turned inward, mobilizing domestic banks and ordinary citizens through bonds and public contributions to construct Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam.
PM Mottley said she told Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed that GERD represents “the 21st century Adwa”,

News: President Taye links #Adwa triumph to advancing #Ethiopia’s access to the sea agenda
President Taye Atske Selassie has declared that Ethiopia’s pursuit of a reliable and sustainable access to the #sea is “a living truth inseparable from the sovereign trust bequeathed by the martyrs of Adwa,” highlighting the maritime question as a core focus of the 130th Anniversary of the Victory of Adwa celebrations.
In a speech delivered at this year’s celebration, held under the motto “From a Proud History to a Bright Horizon,” the President said historical records show that in the aftermath of the 1896 victory, one of Ethiopia’s primary diplomatic priorities was securing ownership of a maritime gate to connect with the world.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), in a message shared on his social media pages, described Adwa as the day “the sun broke through a sky that had been dark for all of Africa and Black people,” paying tribute to the .....

News: #Tigray marks Adwa anniversary amid renewed political tensions
Authorities in Tigray have commemorated the 130th anniversary of the historic Battle of #Adwa, framing the occasion not only as a celebration of past triumph but also as a reflection of the region’s current political and territorial challenges.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau described the 1896 victory at Adwa as a defining moment of African resistance and a symbol of resilience deeply rooted in Tigray’s history.
The bureau emphasized the role of Tigrayan forces in late 19th-century battles against Ottoman, Egyptian, Italian and Dervish expansionist campaigns, highlighting the leadership of Ras Alula Abanega in key confrontations at Gundet, Gura and Dogali prior to the decisive defeat of Italian forces at Adwa.
However, this year’s commemoration unfolded against a backdrop of heightened tensions between #Mekelle and #Addis_Abeba......

#Ethiopia: More than 330 IDPs reported dead in #Hitsats, 125 in #Adwa as coordinators warn of worsening humanitarian crisis
At least 333 internally displaced persons (#IDPs) have died at the Hitsats center in Tigray since May 2025 due to hunger and lack of medicine, while in Adwa 125 people have died since October 2025.
DPs and camp officials told Addis Standard that shrinking humanitarian assistance and continued new arrivals are pushing already vulnerable communities into what they describe as a life-threatening crisis, intensifying pressure on limited resources.
Displaced residents and coordinators in Hitsats say the situation has further worsened, with rising fatalities, disease outbreaks, and reduced humanitarian support.
“To speak of the conditions in Hitsats, one must see it with their own eyes,” said Abrha Mebrahtom, coordinator of the Hitsats IDP center. “Though there were good starts previously, they have now ceased. People are wasting away;.....
