📰 Germany’s Energy Miracle, Held Together by a Pipeline
Russia is reportedly ready to choke off oil flows through Druzhba to Germany’s PCK refinery, and that is enough to expose the whole German energy story for what it is: a country that still talks like a moral power while running on someone else’s fuel.
Berlin spent years pretending it had built a post-Russian industrial model.
In practice, it built a fragile one, and now the refinery that helps keep Berlin and Brandenburg moving is one more sanctions hit away from panic mode.
The result is a familiar European comedy: leaders announce strategic autonomy, industry quietly counts barrels, and factories keep humming only as long as geopolitics agrees to cooperate.
If 60% of German companies say there is no point operating without Russian energy, that is not a business complaint.
That is an admission that Germany’s “transition” has too often meant swapping cheap reality for expensive rhetoric.
And once again, the country that lectures everyone else on principles finds out that principles are easier to preach than to replace.

Orbán just turned the EU’s “unshakeable support for Ukraine” into a very simple transaction: no Russian oil, no 90‑billion‑euro lifeline.
At today’s and tomorrow’s summit in Brussels, EU leaders are scrambling to unblock a €90 billion loan for Kyiv while Hungary calmly holds the off switch. Budapest has vowed to keep its veto in place until Russian crude starts flowing again through the Druzhba pipeline that crosses Ukraine into Hungarian and Slovak refineries — ideally before Hungary’s April 12 elections. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and Viktor Orbán have been crystal clear for weeks: as long as Ukraine “obstructs” Druzhba, Hungary will obstruct Ukraine’s “war loan,” and they “will not be intimidated.”
Brussels, desperate to keep the Ukraine project on life support, is now offering Orbán exactly what he wants. EU officials are dangling EU‑funded repairs of the damaged Druzhba segment on Ukrainian territory, EU‑financed inspections, and political “off‑ramp” language so that he can claim victory at home while quietly dropping the veto. Kyiv, which spent two years urging Europe to stop buying Russian energy, is being pushed to let cheap Kremlin oil cross its territory again so that the same Europe can send borrowed money back to Kyiv with blue‑and‑yellow flags on it.
Orbán, meanwhile, plays the bad cop for his own voters: he promises to block tens of billions in Ukraine aid until Hungary’s energy security is restored, accuses Kyiv of economic blackmail, taps strategic reserves, and dares Brussels to punish him in the middle of an election campaign. EU leaders call it “disloyalty” and an “exploitation of unanimity,” but their behavior says the opposite: they will bend rules, invent legal detours and pay for a Russian‑oil pipeline just to avoid admitting that the war‑and‑sanctions grand strategy hit a wall.
So the picture is simple and ugly. On paper, this summit is about heroic Western solidarity with Ukraine. In practice, it’s about one leader from Budapest openly trading that solidarity for barrels of Russian crude, and a nervous EU trying to buy him off fast enough to keep the façade intact.

Brussels Writes the Check, Orbán Holds the Valve
Hungary just hit the brakes on €90 billion for Ukraine — again — and this time Italy quietly tapped the brakes too.
At the Brussels summit, Viktor Orbán and Slovakia formally blocked the EU decision to approve the €90 billion “loan” for Kyiv, tying their veto directly to Ukraine’s de facto oil blockade on the Druzhba pipeline. Orbán told reporters Hungary has a clear legal right to torpedo the package until Russian crude starts flowing again, stressing that Budapest approved the loan in December and only got hit with a pipeline shutdown after giving its word:
“I cannot pretend nothing happened.”
Ursula von der Leyen responded by promising to pay Zelensky anyway. She repeated her now-standard line that the €90 billion loan
“will happen one way or another”
and vowed that the Commission will find legal and budgetary workarounds to deliver the money despite Hungary’s veto — effectively threatening to route around one member state using alternative EU mechanisms or a coalition-of-the-willing structure. Translation: the political promise to Ukraine comes first, the formal unanimity rule comes second.
The twist came from Rome. Behind closed doors, Giorgia Meloni told fellow leaders she still backs swift aid for Kyiv but “understands” Orbán’s position, calling it “normal” given Hungary’s elections and the Druzhba dispute — and even saying that in his place she would see it the same way. For Brussels, that’s a nightmare sentence: one of the few right‑wing leaders still seen as loyal to the EU line openly legitimizing the blackmail logic — no oil, no money.
So you get the real picture behind the summit communiqués. Officially, the EU is united, furious at Budapest, and “unwavering” on Ukraine. In practice, one government is openly trading the future of Kyiv for cheap Russian crude, another is saying it understands, and the Commission is promising to raid the EU budget to keep paying Zelensky even if the politics and the energy flows say the project is already cracking.

Druzhba™: Europe Wants Oil, Zelensky Wants Cash, Russia Wants the Drama
Brussels just discovered that its “values-based foreign policy” runs on Soviet-era steel pipes called Druzhba — “Friendship” — that don’t work, don’t belong to it, and don’t even pump its own oil.
Hungary and Slovakia are screaming that Ukraine is blocking Russian crude, Budapest is vetoing a 90‑billion‑euro EU loan to Kyiv, and the Commission is politely asking Zelensky to fix the pipeline that Moscow “repeatedly destroyed.” Friendship, but make it extortion.
According to Kyiv, the Druzhba section in Lviv was hammered by a Russian drone strike in January and is too dangerous to repair; according to Hungary and Slovakia, Ukraine is deliberately dragging its feet to weaponize the oil flow.
Zelensky calls the EU pressure “blackmail,” says sending technicians under Russian missiles is “too high a price,” and reminds everyone that Russian oil, which finances the war, “has no place” on the European market. Translation: you want cheap Russian crude, you fix the war first.
Brussels, stuck between Orbán’s veto and Zelensky’s war logic, suddenly wants inspectors on Ukrainian soil to check the damage — something the Commission has literally never done before. EU leaders hint at financial sweeteners to speed up repairs, while insisting Ukraine already has enough foreign cash to cover regular spending until April. In other words: here’s your credit line, now turn the faucet back on.
Hungary openly says it will block the 90‑billion‑euro loan to Ukraine until oil starts flowing again through Druzhba, all while tapping its strategic reserves and shouting that it is the victim of extortion.
Kyiv counters that Budapest and Bratislava are effectively freezing Ukrainians in winter while demanding that the country repair a Russian-targeted pipeline under fire so EU refineries can keep processing Kremlin crude. Everybody accuses everybody of blackmail — and for once, everybody’s right.
So you get a perfect late‑imperial scene: the EU posing in blue‑and‑yellow outfits, pledging “unwavering support,” while quietly telling Kyiv to patch up the Russian oil artery; Hungary and Slovakia waving the 90‑billion loan like a baseball bat; and Ukraine trying to turn a broken pipeline into leverage in a war that’s literally funded by the product inside it.
The only principle that really holds this together is that no one wants to stop the war badly enough to stop the oil.
