#Trump says he will try to bring #Egyptian, #Ethiopian leaders together over GERD
US President Donald Trump said he would try to bring the leaders of Egypt and Ethiopia together to revive negotiations over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), describing the project as a “dangerous issue.”
Speaking during a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump described the GERD as one of the largest dams in the world and claimed it “basically blocks the Nile River.” He said negotiations were close to a deal toward the end of his previous term but stalled afterward.
Trump said he would try to put talks “back on track,” adding that both countries have “strong leaders” and expressing confidence that a deal could be reached.

The #Nile dam standoff is heating up, and #Israel is caught between allies – analysis
#US President Donald Trump is widely admired in Israel for achieving what no other leader could: bringing home #Gaza hostages and imposing a ceasefire on what seemed to be an endless war.
Now it appears the self-appointed head of the new Board of Peace may be about to challenge the odds again, this time with a planned plunge into the waters of the Nile. In January, Trump formally notified #Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi that the US is renewing efforts to resolve the longstanding dispute between Egypt, joined by #Sudan, on the one hand, and #Ethiopia on the other, over the longest river in the world.
The most noteworthy aspect of the planned mediation is that the US is firmly on Egypt’s side, as it had been in past US mediation, which Ethiopia broke off in 2020. This means that to make a Trumpian “deal,” the president’s instinct may be to try to use .......

News: Amid deepening rift Southwest State accuses #Somalia’s fed. govt of diverting ‘#Egyptian weapons’ to militias
Tensions between Somalia’s federal government and the #Southwest_State have escalated after the regional parliament speaker accused #Mogadishu of diverting weapons supplied by Egypt to local militias instead of using them against al-Shabab.
In a statement posted on 21 March, Dr. Ali Said Fiqi, Speaker of the Southwest State Parliament, alleged that firearms provided by Egypt for national security purposes had been rerouted to armed groups operating in Burhakaba district.
Egypt has in recent years increased its military cooperation with Somalia, including supplying weapons and preparing troop contributions to #AUSSOM, a new African Union-led mission replacing the previous peacekeeping framework.

#Opinion: Encircled and Exposed: #Berbera as #Ethiopia’s last strategic exit
Ethiopia’s status as the Horn’s stabilizer has eroded, leaving the nation “constrained, exposed, and increasingly boxed in” by unfriendly neighbors, writes Mohamed Guleid. He cautions that #Djibouti, Ethiopia’s maritime lifeline, has compromised its neutrality by agreeing to host an #Egyptian military presence, while #Eritrea and #Somalia align with #Cairo over the #Nile dispute.
Allowing adversaries to shadow its main supply route crosses a “strategic red line.” For a nation of 120 million, “diversification is no longer a luxury.”
Guleid argues the solution lies in Somaliland, highlighting that the Berbera Port and its corridor are operational but underused. He notes, “Recognition of Somaliland would change Ethiopia’s position overnight,” expanding sea access, easing pressure, and restoring strategic leverage.
