🇺🇸The University of San Francisco School of Law Embeds GenAI Into Core Curriculum
Еhe University of San Francisco School of Law has integrated generative AI into its first-year curriculum as a core part of how students learn to think, write, and advocate as legal professionals.
Students learn to:
✔️ Use AI in legal analysis and evaluate AI-generated legal content, focusing on efficiency while critically evaluating its output for errors in reasoning, accuracy, clarity, and structure.
✔️ Use iterative prompting to revise and improve AI outputs, building stronger arguments and more effective legal writing.
✔️ Accelerate legal research by augmenting traditional methods using a variety of legal AI platforms.
✔️ Confront ethical issues, including confidentiality, bias, and the responsible use of automation.

🇺🇸AI Misuse in Legal Practice Leads to Sanctions
Two lawyers defending MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell have been fined $6,000 for submitting a court brief containing AI-generated false citations and misquotes, including references to non-existent cases. US District Judge Nina Wang ruled that attorneys Christopher Kachouroff and Jennifer DeMaster violated Rule 11 by failing to ensure their legal contentions were grounded in real law, noting that similar conduct had occurred in a separate case just days earlier.
The flawed document, which the lawyers claimed was a mistakenly filed draft, included nearly 30 erroneous citations. Judge Wang was not persuaded by the explanation and found substantive issues even in their so-called corrected version. The fine was issued as the “least severe sanction adequate to deter and punish” misuse of AI in court proceedings—an increasingly visible problem as legal professionals integrate AI tools without proper verification.

🇱🇺AI in Criminal Verdicts: Rotterdam Court’s Experiment
The Rotterdam District Court has tested AI as a drafting tool for sentencing motivations in criminal cases. Judges and clerks used AI to generate an initial draft explaining the reasoning behind a court’s punishment decision. The AI did not influence the judgment itself, and all parties were informed about its use post-verdict.
While AI improved efficiency and structure, concerns remain over the risks of using public AI tools in legal proceedings. The court suggests developing a secure, internal AI system trained on publicly available verdicts to ensure confidentiality and enhance accuracy.

Supreme Court of India Leverages AI for Enhanced Judicial Access
The Supreme Court of India is taking significant strides in making justice more accessible through the integration of Artificial Intelligence. By utilizing AI language technology, the Court is translating judicial documents, automating legal research, and even transcribing oral arguments, particularly in Constitution Bench cases since February 2023. This initiative aims to break down language barriers and bring judicial processes closer to the people.
A dedicated committee, led by a Supreme Court Judge, oversees the translation of key judgments into vernacular languages, ensuring that regional High Courts are actively participating in this transformation. As of August 2024, over 36,000 Supreme Court judgments have been translated into Hindi, with another 17,000 translated into 16 regional languages, now available on the e-SCR portal. This effort is part of a broader mandate to fulfill the constitutional promise of 'access to justice' by making legal documents comprehensible to all citizens.

Lawhive Raises $12 Million to Democratize Legal Tech with AI
Lawhive, a UK-based legal tech startup, has secured almost $12 million in seed funding to expand its AI-powered platform for small law firms.
Unlike most legal tech companies targeting large firms ("Big Law"), Lawhive specifically caters to the needs of smaller, independent practices. These "main street" firms often lack the resources to invest in cutting-edge technology, leaving them at a competitive disadvantage.
Lawhive provides an AI-powered "in-house lawyer" through a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform. This platform offers several benefits for small firms:
✅Client Management: Streamline client onboarding, case management, and document organization.
✅AI-Assisted Tasks: Leverage AI for repetitive tasks like KYC/AML checks, client intake, and document collection.
✅AI Lawyer "Lawrence": Utilize Lawhive's proprietary AI lawyer built on a large language model (LLM). Lawhive claims "Lawrence" even passed the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) with a score exceeding the required benchmark.
Lawhive CEO Pierre Proner emphasizes the underserved nature of the "main street" legal market:
"Pretty much all of the existing legal tech... go after the corporate market... We're trying to solve the problem in the consumer legal space, which is a totally different market."
Millions of people face legal issues but lack access to affordable legal representation. Many small businesses also struggle to handle legal matters on their own. Lawhive's AI-powered platform aims to bridge this gap by improving efficiency and affordability for both lawyers and clients.

🇺🇸When AI in Legal Practice Goes Wrong
A U.S. federal judge has sanctioned attorney Rafael Ramirez with a $15,000 penalty after he submitted multiple court filings containing AI-generated, nonexistent case citations. Ramirez admitted he was unaware that AI tools could fabricate legal precedents and failed to verify the sources before submitting them.
Judge Mark Dinsmore emphasized that AI is not inherently problematic but must be used responsibly: "Any use of artificial intelligence must be accompanied by the application of actual intelligence." This case serves as a stark reminder—lawyers leveraging AI must conduct due diligence or face serious professional and financial consequences.

🇺🇸UChicago Law’s AI Lab: Building Practical AI for Renter Rights
This fall, the University of Chicago Law School will launch the AI Lab, an immersive course where students design and release a real-world AI legal-tech product. Led by Kimball Dean Parker, the program’s flagship project is an AI chatbot focused on renter rights across all 50 U.S. states—a field where laws vary widely and legal information can be difficult to access or understand.
Over the quarter, students will compile a rigorously researched database of state-specific landlord–tenant law, interview renters to map real needs, and design the tool for usability and reliability. Parker’s approach is clear: better data in, better AI out. By course’s end, the chatbot—built for accuracy beyond generic AI models—will be made publicly available, providing accessible legal guidance to those who cannot afford a lawyer.

🇺🇸California Courts Set Precedent with Generative AI Governance
California’s Judicial Council has adopted Rule 10.430, establishing one of the first formal frameworks in the United States for the use of generative AI within the judiciary. Covering the Superior Courts, Courts of Appeal, and Supreme Court, the rule requires each court permitting AI use by staff or judicial officers to adopt a policy by December 15, 2025.
Standard 10.80 provides detailed guidance, built on six core principles:
✔️ confidentiality,
✔️ non-discrimination,
✔️ accuracy,
✔️ bias mitigation,
✔️ disclosure, and
✔️ compliance with ethical and legal obligations.
This framework reflects a balance between uniformity and flexibility, situating AI use within broad legal and professional values rather than prescribing specific technologies. While binding only on judicial officers, it sends a strong signal to the legal community: disclosure, verification, and client confidentiality will be expected. With California being the largest court system in the country taking the lead, these principles are poised to influence litigation strategy, attorney ethics, and potentially, national AI governance in the legal sector.
