🇻🇳Vietnam Invites Pope Leo XIV for Historic Visit
Vietnam's National Assembly chairman Tran Thanh Man presented Pope Leo XIV with an official invitation from Communist Party General Secretary and President To Lam on April 11. Pope Leo XIV expressed his wish to visit the country in the near future and said he hoped to further deepen bilateral ties.
Hanoi and the Vatican have had no official diplomatic relations since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. A joint working group has met since 2009 to work toward restoring ties, and in 2023 the two sides agreed to establish a resident papal representative in Vietnam.
Vietnam has approximately six million Catholics, comprising around six per cent of the population. Human rights groups have accused the Vietnamese government of restricting religious freedoms.

🇻🇳Vietnam Elects Technocrat Le Minh Hung PM
Vietnam's National Assembly elected Le Minh Hung as prime minister on Tuesday, making him the country's youngest person to hold the office since 1955. Hung, born in 1970, built his career in financial technocracy rather than provincial politics, serving as central bank governor from 2016 to late 2020, where he helped stabilise macroeconomic foundations and expand foreign reserves.
Hung enters office with thinner political networks than his predecessor Pham Minh Chinh, having never held a provincial leadership role. His tenure at the State Bank also coincided with the Van Thinh Phat fraud case, one of Vietnam's largest financial scandals, which drew scrutiny over supervisory oversight during his governorship.
Hung will operate under General Secretary To Lam, who has consolidated authority over personnel, security, and economic strategy to a degree not seen in the post-Doi Moi era. External pressures include ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States, energy supply shortfalls compounded by Middle East conflict, and intensifying pressure from both Washington and Beijing for more explicit strategic alignment.

🇻🇳Vietnam's Communist Party wins 97% assembly seats
Vietnam's Communist Party secured 482 of 500 seats in the national assembly, according to results released by Parliament on March 22. The total represented nearly 97 per cent of seats, broadly matching the party's share in the outgoing legislature. Reported turnout exceeded 99 per cent, consistent with previous cycles.
The unicameral assembly holds limited authority to challenge party decisions on personnel or policy, though it has at times amended proposed legislation. Its first session of the new term is scheduled to open on April 6, when lawmakers are expected to confirm new state leaders nominated by the party.
General Secretary To Lam, confirmed in that role at the party's January congress, is widely expected to be named president as well. That dual role would align Vietnam's leadership structure with that of China, where Xi Jinping concurrently serves as general secretary and president.

🇻🇳 Vietnam Communist Party confirms To Lam as leader for next 5 years
Vietnam's top leader To Lam was confirmed on Friday as head of the ruling Communist Party for the next five years.
No official announcement has yet been made after a meeting of the 180 members of the central committee, elected on Thursday, who were expected to appoint on Friday the general secretary, the country's most powerful job, which incumbent Lam has bid to retain.
Lam has been party chief since mid-2024 when he replaced the late general secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

🇻🇳Vietnam’s To Lam pledges growth above 10% despite global challenges
Vietnam’s top leader To Lam on Jan 20 pledged an annual economic growth of more than 10% for the remainder of the decade despite global disruptions, as he addressed delegates at the Communist Party congress that will decide his political future.
The week-long event, which convenes every five years and started on Jan 19 in Hanoi, will select the party chief, the most powerful position in the single-party country, and set economic goals up to 2030.
Lam, a former head of state security, is seeking to retain his role as party chief and possibly take on the state presidency.

🇻🇳Vietnam's top leadership talks heat up as Communist Party meets
Senior officials of Vietnam's ruling Communist Party began a two-day meeting that is set to select candidates for the country's leadership positions for the next five years.
The gathering precedes the five-yearly party congress, scheduled on January 19-25, which will formally nominate leaders and set key policy and economic targets for the remainder of the decade.
Party chief To Lam opened the meeting saying the plenum of the party's central committee is tasked with finalising the selection of state and party leaders, according to his speech published on the government portal.
Lam is seeking a second term as party chief, the country's most powerful job which he assumed in August last year after his predecessor Nguyen Phu Trong died.
