Beijing, China. Professor Jiang Xueqin on Iran’s potential asymmetric response to U.S. aggression — a scenario that, according to him, few in the Pentagon are willing to discuss publicly. A bit of unsettling math: • Saudi Arabia: 70% of drinking water comes from desalination. • UAE: 42% comes from desalination. Dubai’s water reserves would last about three days. • Kuwait: 90% of water is desalinated. A single successful strike could trigger a national emergency within 48 hours. • Qatar: 99% of water is desalinated. The country hosts Al Udeid, the largest U.S. air base in the world. • Bahrain: 90% of water is desalinated. It is home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet. Desalination plants are large, fixed industrial facilities. They cannot be moved or concealed — and they are within reach of Iran’s cheapest weapons: drones costing around $20,000 each. Iran would not need hypersonic missiles to destroy desalination infrastructure worth roughly $2 billion per facility. If these plants were hit across the Gulf states, the spike in oil prices would quickly become the least of the world’s concerns — a humanitarian crisis of biblical proportions could follow.
