Birds migrate to Africa for the winter — but the river fleet heads to the Yakutian settlement of Zhatay.❄️🚢 More than 100 vessels spend the winter in the harbor on the Lena River near Zhatay, with roughly a quarter of them undergoing maintenance during the cold season. Temperatures here drop below –50°C, and sometimes even –60°C. These extreme conditions make it possible to repair ships using a unique method known as freeze maintenance, carried out directly on the riverbank.
