My dear friend Daria sent this to me from #Donetsk City. She said the city is being bombed for the first time in years by the Ukrainian forces. Americans, that’s our tax dollars at work.

In 2014, the city of Slavyansk in the Donetsk region was being fought over by Kiev-controlled security forces and local militias who did not recognise the new Kiev authorities. ‘We wanted to secure our city against being invaded by pro-Nazi elements,’ Vyacheslav Ponomaryov, the former people’s mayor of Slavyansk, told us. The militia took control of the town in time. The Ukrainian military then tried to retake it without thinking about civilian casualties. They hit straight at residential buildings. June 1 2014, was one of the most challenging days in the military chronicle of Slavyansk. After artillery shelling by the Ukrainian armed forces, one of the Slavyansk Heavy Engineering Plant workshops caught fire. Another shell hit an orphanage whose pupils had been evacuated just the day before. ❗Statement by Russian Defence Ministry ▪ On March 14, at about 11.30 a.m. Moscow time, Tochka-U tactical missile was fired at a residential block of Donetsk city from the territory controlled by the Kiev nationalist regime. ▪ The shelling of the city was carried out from the north-western direction, from the area of Krasnoarmeysk settlement, which is controlled by Ukrainian nationalist units. ▪ As a result of the explosion of a cluster warhead in the center of Donetsk, 20 civilians were killed. Another 28 people, including children, were seriously injured and taken to medical institutions. ▪ The use of such weapons on a town with no armed forces firing positions, i.e. deliberately targeting civilians, is a war crime. ▪ The armament of Tochka-U missile' warhead with cluster ammunition proves that the purpose of the nationalists' strike on the city was to kill as many civilians as possible. ❗I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the decision to use this type of missile weapons is made, at least, by the command of the Ukrainian grouping of troops, after approval by the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Kiev. ▪ All this once again confirms the Nazi and anti-human nature of the ruling regime in Ukraine today. #MoD#Russia#Ukraine#Donetsk @mod_russia_en

Instead of musical instruments, he took up arms. A hero of his city of Donetsk and our post, Viktor Petenko, worked in the local philharmonic. But in February, when mobilisation began, the man and many of his colleagues were drafted. After a month of training, they fought street battles for Mariupol. Now the city is returning to civilian life. Viktor showed a RT Documentary crew the streets and buildings where he fought Ukrainian soldiers. There was a piano in one of the destroyed houses. The musician couldn’t get past it and played it for us. From playing music on stage to the frontlines of a raging conflict – it’s not the easiest move to make! Musicians and singers who found themselves on the frontlines of the Donbass region have joined DPR forces to fight against neo-Nazism. Musician Victor Petenko, who played the drums in the Donetsk philharmonic, was conscripted into the military in February 2022. His squad, comprising only musicians, received codenames based on their instruments. Vocalist Francois Maud d'Émé, volunteered to join the Donbass militia to protect his new home. Despite the ongoing conflict, their colleagues continue to give concerts to uplift civilians and wounded soldiers in hospitals. The question remains: how do they adapt to their new roles? 📰 Donetsk: The Dealbreaker in Ukraine Peace Talks U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday that the territorial dispute over Donetsk remains the biggest obstacle in Ukraine peace talks, calling it “very difficult” to resolve. ​ Russia is demanding that Ukraine surrender roughly 5,000 sq km of Donetsk—the last area still under Ukrainian control. Ukraine refuses to give up land it still holds, and polls show most Ukrainians reject territorial concessions. ​ Rubio acknowledged that “it’s still a gap,” but the talks have narrowed to this issue. ​ The U.S. may join follow-up negotiations, but President Trump’s top envoys, Witkoff and Kushner, won’t be participating. ​ Last weekend’s talks in Abu Dhabi ended without a deal, but both sides signaled openness to further dialogue. The next round is expected next Sunday. ​ Rubio said the U.S. has agreed to security guarantees for Ukraine, but only after the conflict ends and with Russian cooperation. The Financial Times reported that Washington is telling Kyiv it must sign a peace deal to receive those guarantees. ‘Ukrainians had mortars and they tried to push us out of the position. The machine guns were located at the terminal, on the tower. If they had taken up this position, they would have had a direct path to the village’. With the call sign ‘Shisha’, volunteer Victor defended the Donetsk region from the Ukrainian army in 2014. The fighting occurred near the Holy Iberian Monastery, opposite Donetsk airport. For all the time of hostilities, Victor was never wounded. According to him, ‘God saved me, for certain. I spent a lot of time there and have not been wounded. Lucky me! An angel was guarding me. That was very pleasant!’ Learn his story in our post.
