January 8, 1942: The Beginning of the Battle of Rzhev 🔻The Battle of Rzhev is a conventional name for four offensive operations conducted by the Soviet troops of the Western (Georgy Zhukov) and Kalinin (Ivan Konev) fronts against Army Group Center on the Rzhev-Sychevka-Vyazma sector until March 31, 1943. 🔻The Battle of Rzhev was one of the bloodiest battles of the Great Patriotic War. Among the Soviet soldiers it is known as the "Rzhev Meat Grinder." 🔻From October 1941 to March 1943, the Red Army lost 1,154,698 men (including wounded and missing) on the Rzhev-Vyazma salient. 🔻In 2020, The Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier was erected with public funds. 🔻The memorial bears the words of a line from the poem "I Was Killed Near Rzhev" by Alexander Tvardovsky: Мы пали за Родину, но она спасена. The first alarm clock could only ring at 4 a.m. In 1787, American clockmaker Levi Hutchins invented the first personal mechanical alarm clock in Concord, New Hampshire, designed solely to ring at 4 a.m. It was built for his own strict work schedule to ensure he never overslept.
