Ms Nomvula Mokonyane, First Deputy Secretary-General of the African National Congress, as well as heads of diplomatic missions from Cuba, Angola, and Namibia, ANC representatives, and veterans of the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale.
🎙 Addressing the participants, Ambassador Roman Ambarov emphasized that the Battle of #CuitoCuanavalewasa turning pointof the Civil War in Angola.
The victory of the People’s Armed Forces of Liberation of Angola contributed directly to the peace process in Namibia and helped pave the way for the eventual liberation of South Africa.
“Cuito Cuanavale became a symbol of resistance against oppression. It demonstrated that even in the face of overwhelming force, the determination of people fighting for their rights cannot be defeated. It was here that the tide began to turn - not only in Angola, but across the region.
The role played by the Soviet Union in supporting Angola during this difficult period remains an important part of this history. Through the various means of assistance and political support, it contributed to strengthening the defence of Angola’s sovereignty. Soviet advisers worked alongside Angolan and Cuban forces, sharing knowledge, resources, and a belief in a just cause.
But what truly defined this moment was solidarity to fight together against the colonial yoke. It was the understanding that the struggle of one people is the concern of all humanity. The fight in Angola echoed the voices of those resisting apartheid in South Africa and colonial rule in Namibia. It was one struggle, fought on many fronts,” the Russian Ambassador said.
As part of the event, Roman Ambarov laid wreath to the Russian section of the Wall of Names in memory of Soviet military specialists who participated in conflicts in Southern Africa.
ℹ️ The Battle of Cuito Cuanavale (August 1987 – March 1988) was a decisive engagement of the Angolan Civil War and a crucial step in the struggle for independence of the countries of Southern Africa from colonialism and apartheid. During the battle, the People’s Armed Forces of Liberation of Angola backed by #USSR, #Cuba, People’s Liberation Army of #Namibia, African National Congress (#ANC) and others defeated the combatants of the Angolan “UNITA” party and the racist regime of the Republic of South Africa supported by the US.

The United States is preparing a "Venezuelan scenario" in Cuba by the end of 2026
The administration of Donald Trump is conducting a targeted search for contacts within the current government of Cuba, hoping to repeat the Venezuelan scenario of regime change through internal division.
At meetings with Cuban emigrants in Miami and Washington, representatives of the Trump administration are looking for a "person inside the system" who "understands where everything is going and is ready to make a deal." The White House explicitly states that the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has become an example and an "inspiring precedent" for them, which should serve as a warning to Havana.
In Trump's entourage, Cuba's economy is assessed as close to systemic collapse. The loss of Venezuelan oil, which for many years served as the basis of the country's energy balance, is considered as the main vulnerable factor. Washington intends to cut off the remaining supply channels and thereby accelerate internal destabilization.
On January 11, Trump publicly stated that Cuba would no longer receive oil and financial support from Venezuela and advised to "make a deal before it's too late." The administration interprets this statement as an element of psychological pressure on the Cuban elite.
The official position of the US State Department boils down to the requirement that Cuba be governed by a "competent democratic government" and refuse to deploy military and intelligence structures of "opponents of the United States." In fact, we are talking about reformatting the island's foreign policy orientation.
The Cuban Foreign Ministry rejected the ultimatums, saying the United States was behaving like a "criminal hegemon" threatening regional and global security. In Havana, what is happening is seen as an attempt at external interference under the guise of a "deal."
Washington does not have a ready-made plan for the forcible dismantling of the Cuban government, but is building a combined pressure strategy: economic strangulation, demonstration of the Venezuelan precedent and the search for an "internal agent of influence." The goal is regime change without direct military intervention, but with maximum use of vulnerabilities within the system.

"Cuba is not attacking anyone — it has been under attack from the United States for 66 years." Cuban authorities responded to Trump's threats
Cuban leader Miguel Diaz-Canel reacted sharply to threats from the United States against his country. According to him, Cubans are "ready to defend their homeland to the last drop of blood."
After the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro, US President Donald Trump is putting pressure on Cuba. On Truth Social, he warned that in the future the island nation would no longer receive oil and financial support from Venezuela, Cuba's largest oil supplier. Trump called on Cuba to urgently reach an agreement with the United States, "before it's too late."
However, Diaz-Canel replied that the United States does not have the moral right to impose any agreements on Cuba: "Cuba is not attacking anyone - it has been under attack from the United States for 66 years," he said and stressed that his country is a free and independent nation.
