Music Industry's Take on the EU AI Act Hello, everyine! Daniel Tencer, Deputy Editor at Music Business Worldwide, has dissected the EU AI Act, shedding light on its impact on the music industry. Tencer considers the AI Act a pivotal legislation chord for the music industry, specifically addressing copyright concerns and transparency in AI training. Rightsholders, notably represented by the global music industry through IFPI, express cautious optimism, finding support in the Act's stance that AI training with copyrighted materials necessitates permission. However, exceptions for scientific research inject complexity, raising concerns about potential loopholes. A significant concern in the music industry is the Act's "opt-out" provision, placing the responsibility on rightsholders to prohibit the use of their content in AI training. This differs from the industry's preferred "opt-in" model, where AI developers would inherently need licenses before usage. The Act suggests that a summary of data sources might suffice for compliance, a potential hiccup given the vast data, like Common Crawl, in AI training. #EUAIAct#Copyright#AIInnovation

European Commission Supports Dutch AI Oversight System Hello, everybody! The European Commission is aiding the Netherlands in establishing a national Artificial Intelligence supervision system. The rapid growth of AI technology has outpaced regulatory frameworks, posing challenges for ensuring safety and ethical standards. To address this, the Commission has launched a technical support project in collaboration with UNESCO to assist the Dutch Authority for Digital Infrastructure. This initiative will assess existing AI supervision systems, offer best practices, create supervision scenarios, and provide practical guidance to the Dutch Authority. It will also involve other EU competent authorities to collectively tackle the complex challenges of overseeing AI technologies. This project aligns with the forthcoming Artificial Intelligence Act, the EU's first AI regulation, designed to enhance research and industrial capacity while safeguarding fundamental rights and safety. Once approved, it will set the world's first rules on AI. #AIRegulation#EuropeanAI#AIInnovation

UK Supreme Court finds AI is not and never was an inventor for patent purposes Hello everyone! The UK Supreme Court has ruled against granting patent rights to artificial intelligence in a case where a U.S. computer scientist sought patents for inventions created by his AI system named DABUS. Stephen Thaler's attempt to register AI-generated patents was rejected by the UK's Intellectual Property Office, stating that, under UK patent law, an inventor must be a human or a company, not a machine. The UK Supreme Court unanimously upheld the rejection, emphasizing that an inventor must be a natural person. The ruling doesn't address the broader question of patentability for technical advances powered by autonomous AI. Thaler's lawyers argue that this ruling renders UK patent law unsuitable for protecting AI-generated inventions, affecting industries relying on AI for technological advancements. Thaler faced a similar outcome in the United States earlier this year, where the Supreme Court declined to challenge the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's refusal to issue patents for AI-created inventions. The UK Supreme Court's decision aligns with similar rulings in Europe, Australia, and the U.S., providing clarity that inventors, for now, must be natural persons. #AILaw#AIInnovation#PatentLaw

🌟AI Sunday Wonders: Toyota's Breakfast Bots Show How Robots Learn Welcome to AI Sunday Wonders! This week, we're diving into the fascinating world of AI-powered robots, and Toyota has a delightful story to share. Toyota Research Institute (TRI) has introduced the concept of a "kindergarten for robots." But here's the twist: these robots are learning to make breakfast! Traditionally, teaching robots complex tasks required extensive coding and debugging. However, TRI is taking a different approach. By giving robots a sense of touch, they allow the robots to "feel" their actions, making learning easier. Here's how it works: A "teacher" initially demonstrates a set of skills, and then, over a few hours, the AI model learns in the background. Imagine teaching a robot in the afternoon and coming back the next morning to find it mastering a new skill. Toyota aims to create "Large Behavior Models" (LBMs) for robots, allowing them to generalize new skills based on observed patterns, similar to how AI models learn from human writing patterns. They've already trained robots in over 60 challenging skills and plan to reach 1,000 by 2024. Toyota isn't alone in this endeavor; Google and Tesla are also making strides in AI training for robots. Imagine the possibilities: AI-trained robots that can perform tasks with minimal instruction, just like humans. #AISundayWonders#ToyotaRobots#AIInnovation

OpenAI Responds to The New York Times in Copyright Dispute Hello everyone! OpenAI has issued a public response to The New York Times' copyright lawsuit, dismissing the claims as "without merit" and expressing a desire to collaborate with the media giant despite the legal conflict. In a detailed blog post, OpenAI contested allegations that its ChatGPT AI tool replicated Times articles verbatim, asserting that the Times manipulated prompts to induce repeated excerpts. OpenAI emphasized that its models do not typically behave as suggested by the Times and accused the publication of either instructing the model to regurgitate or selectively presenting examples. The company acknowledged removing the unintentional content reproduction feature, Browse, from ChatGPT. Despite legal disagreements, OpenAI maintained its stance that AI models require access to a vast array of human knowledge for learning and problem-solving, citing fair use rules for repurposing copyrighted works. While respecting copyright ownership, OpenAI hopes for constructive negotiations with the Times, echoing successful partnerships with Axel Springer and The Associated Press. #OpenAI#CopyrightDispute#AIInnovation#MediaPartnership

OpenAI Unveils Preparedness Framework Greetings, AI & Law subscribers! OpenAI has released its groundbreaking preparedness framework, a strategic move aimed at fortifying the safety and ethical development of AI models. In a proactive step towards global AI safety, OpenAI has instituted a safety advisory group empowered to make critical recommendations to the leadership. Notably, the board wields veto power, capable of halting the release of any AI model, even if deemed safe by the leadership—a significant leap in ensuring accountability. Amidst a year of dynamic growth and executive board shuffles, including the swift reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI has actively expanded its safety protocols. The turbulence underscores the company's commitment to aligning rapid development with responsible governance. OpenAI's Preparedness Framework is designed to fill gaps in studying frontier AI risks. It outlines processes to monitor, evaluate, forecast, and safeguard against risks posed by increasingly powerful AI models. The focus is on catastrophic risks, including economic damage and severe harm or loss of life, emphasizing a commitment to responsible AI development. Led by Professor Aleksander Madry, the Preparedness team comprises AI researchers, computer scientists, national security experts, and policy professionals. Their mandate includes vigilant monitoring, continuous testing, and providing early warnings if AI capabilities show signs of becoming hazardous. The framework also pledges to eliminate biases, preventing AI systems from causing harm, particularly in areas like racial biases. As the AI landscape evolves, OpenAI sets the tone for the industry, showcasing the importance of balancing technological innovation with ethical considerations. #AIAndLaw#OpenAI#AISafety#EthicalAI#AIInnovation#TechNews#LegalTech #AIAndLaw#OpenAI#AISafety#EthicalAI#AIInnovation#TechNews#LegalTech
