Prohibited practices will be banned within 6 months, while codes of practice and general-purpose AI rules will be implemented within 9 and 12 months, respectively. The Future of AILD: A Critical Decision for the European Parliament The next European Parliament faces a crucial decision regarding the Artificial Intelligence Liability Directive (AILD). The AILD aims to address potential legal gaps left by the AI Act and Product Liability Directive (PLD). The legal affairs committee has commissioned a study to determine the necessity of AILD, involving the European Parliament’s Research Service and an external contractor. Uncertainty surrounds the AILD’s usefulness, with some Council members skeptical. Kai Zenner, digital policy adviser for MEP Axel Voss, highlighted that two member states have already expressed opposition to the directive. The Parliament must now decide if the AILD is essential for comprehensive AI regulation. #AI#AILD#EuropeanParliament#AIRegulation#TechPolicy

France calls for balance in AI regulation to foster European innovation France's Digital Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, has expressed concerns about the European Parliament's stance on the proposed AI Act, according to Laura Kayali from POLITICO. Barrot believes that the regulations are too strict and could hinder the development of European companies' foundational AI models. He highlighted Google's decision not to launch its chatbot Bard in the EU as an example. France, which has previously taken a strict approach towards regulating Big Tech, now aims to support domestic companies to compete with major players like Google and OpenAI. President Emmanuel Macron and former Digital Minister Cédric O have advocated for finding a balance between regulation and innovation. Will such balance be found? #AIRegulation#EuropeanAI#AIAct#France#EuropeanParliament
