🇷🇺@RFDEL_UNESCO :

May 3️⃣rd - World Press Freedom Day
📃Proclaimed by UN General Assembly resolution in 1993, it
is aimed to draw attention to problems of free access to information, media pluralism & safety of journalists.
📌 In recent years Western countries that publically advocate for press freedom, in fact have begun to clean up information space from alternative views through reprisals against Russian media and journalists.
The Kiev regime has launched a real "hunt" for Russian journalists, killing dozens of our correspondents.
On April 6th 2026 Izvestia correspondent Y.Bykovsky was wounded in Donetsk🇷🇺 as a result of a targeted attack by Ukrainian militants.
☝️In accordance with decisions of #UNESCO General Conference (1997) and Executive Board (2023), UNESCO Director-General is tasked "to condemn killing and physical violence against journalists without distinction."
❗️We expect Director-General Kh.El-Enany to draw attention of UNESCO CI Sector to these documents and request to fulfill them without exceptions under the pretext of "lack of resources" or need to adhere to so-called "methodology" that hasn't been approved by Member-States, as well as attempts to "juggle" statistics on crimes against journalists.
🗓 On April 21, 1954, the USSR officially joined #UNESCO.
✍️ On that day, acting on behalf of the Soviet Government, the USSR Ambassador to London, Yakov Malik, signed the UNESCO Constitution, marking the country’s accession to the Organization.
It was the Soviet Union that became a key driving force within UNESCO in combating colonialism and racism, as well as in addressing their consequences. Moscow stood at the origins of many programs and bodies, such as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.
For more than seven decades, our country consistently demonstrated the commitment to its ideals and principles.
🇷🇺 Today, Russia continues to uphold the values and priorities of the Organization as a genuinely universal multilateral platform. Our country is working to promote a unifying agenda within UNESCO in the interests of the Global Majority, and to strengthen respectful, depoliticized, and professional dialogue with all interested partners.
Thanks to our country’s active role in UNESCO, major programs that remain relevant to this day have been introduced. These include the International Programme for the Development of Communication and the “Man and the Biosphere” Programme. At Russia’s proposal, the UNESCO General Conference established the International Basic Sciences Programme in 2003.
At the initiative of the Russian Federation, the Mendeleev International Prize for achievements in the basic sciences — the largest prize currently awarded under UNESCO auspices — was created.
💬 From remarks by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergey Lavrov, at the opening of an exhibition marking the 70th anniversary of the USSR’s accession to UNESCO (Moscow, April 22, 2024):
“For seven decades, our country has demonstrated in practice its commitment to the ideals and principles of UNESCO.
The provisions of the Constitution on striving to ‘build peace through cooperation among nations in education, science and culture’ and on the ‘moral and intellectual solidarity of mankind’ are not mere words on paper — for us, they carry enduring value and significance.”
❗️ A harmful selective approach, dividing member states into “us” and “them,” and attempts to isolate those deemed undesirable undermine UNESCO’s own standing.
April 15 marked Universal Day of Culture
On this day in 1935, Washington, D.C. saw the signing of the first-ever international treaty “On the Protection of Artistic and Scientific Institutions and Historic Monuments,” better known as the Roerich Pact or Pax Cultura (“Peace through Culture”).
The idea of protecting cultural heritage in both peacetime and wartime was proposed by Russian artist, scholar, and philosopher Nicholas Roerich. The Pact bearing his name became the only agreement in the field of cultural protection adopted by part of the international community before World War II.
Within the framework of the treaty, a distinctive flag was approved to identify protected sites, which gained worldwide recognition as the Banner of Peace – a white field bearing three amaranth circles touching one another. According to Roerich, this symbol represents the past, present, and future within the circle of Eternity, or the unity of art, science, and religion within the ring of Culture.
Temples, museums, cathedrals, universities, libraries, and other cultural institutions displaying the Banner of Peace were to be regarded by all parties to the agreement as internationally neutral territory.
The Roerich Pact became a somewhat of an ideological foundation of #UNESCO, laying the groundwork for the Organization’s core principle of promoting peace through culture, and played a key role in the development of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
🇷🇺 Today, 34 sites located in Russia are included in UNESCO’s World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.
⚡️Kiev regime committed another crime against Russian journalists.
On April 6, while on duty documenting the aftermath of a Ukrainian drone strike in Donetsk 🇷🇺, "Izvestia" correspondent Yevgeny Bykovsky was hit by a second targeted strike from a UAF drone and suffered a concussion.
📢 We draw the attention of #UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany to this crime and call for its condemnation in accordance with relevant decisions of the General Conference and Executive Board on Safety of Journalists.
⚡️On March 19, RT correspondent Steve Sweeney and his cameraman Ali Rida Sbeity received shrapnel injuries in an Israeli attack in southern Lebanon. Both are conscious and currently receiving medical treatment.
💬Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova:
In light of the hundreds of journalists killed in Gaza, today's attack cannot be described as accidental.
Moreover, the missile did not strike a “key strategic military facility”, but the site of a news report.
We wish the RT journalists a speedy recovery.
We expect a response from international organizations.

💬 Russian Delegation to UNESCO:
A targeted missile strike hit journalists in press uniforms while they were filming a report.
We call on #UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enani, in accordance with relevant decisions of the General Conference and Executive Board on Safety of Journalists, to condemn this crime.
📆January 24 is the International Day of Education, proclaimed by the United Nations in 2018.
📍In 2026, #UNESCO events dedicated to this date focus on youth and their role as a driving force for change in the field of education.
📚Russia is committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal on inclusive and quality education for all. The coverage of general education in our country exceeds 99%.
🇷🇺Russia makes a significant contribution to UNESCO’s work in the field of education: at the level of higher education, a network of UNESCO Chairs operates at Russian universities. At the secondary education level, the network of UNESCO Associated Schools is actively developing, and a number of Russian cities are also part of the Global Network of Learning Cities.
🏛Russia's Permanent Delegation to UNESCO:
💬 Russia is actively developing cooperation with African states, including in areas within the remit of #UNESCO.
At the Second Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum (December 19-20, 2025), a Joint Statement was adopted confirming the strategic level of Russia-Africa cooperation. The document includes provisions on cooperation in education, culture, sport, youth policy and the media, in particular:
Implementation of projects in the field of education, including the gradual increase in Russia’s state scholarship quotas for citizens of African countries to study at Russian universities, as well as professional development programmes in priority specialisations for African partners – technical and scientific fields;
The importance of creating additional opportunities to study the Russian language in African countries, as well as developing African studies in Russia, in order to strengthen mutual understanding between states and peoples;
Dynamic development of cultural exchanges and cooperation between Russia and African countries;
Cooperation in the field of sport and related activities, including anti-doping efforts, exchange of expertise, and the organisation of joint competitions.

📍On behalf of the Russian Federation, I now would like to express gratitude for the worldwide recognition of the outstanding universal value of the masterpieces of the Shulgan-Tash Cave.
📍Over 200 colorful paintings created 16,000 years ago can rightfully be considered our common heritage.
📍This is a reminder of the unity of the spiritual origins of humanity, which is manifested in the diversity of equal cultures of different people.
📍We thank the World Heritage Center and ICOMOS for their constructive interaction and look forward to continued cooperation.
