📍The first Sherpa meeting of the G20 under the presidency of South Africa took place in Johannesburg from December 9 to 11 🇷🇺The Russian delegation was headed by Russia's Sherpa, S.V. Lukash. The G20 discussions were focused on: - Conditions for ensuring stable and inclusive economic growth, with an emphasis on the importance of open and unobstructed trade; - Fluctuations in global food prices, with particular attention to the irresponsible macroeconomic decisions made by developed countries, as well as the search for optimal steps for developing nations in this context; - Facilitating access to low-interest loans for developing countries, including the possibility of revising the methodologies of credit rating agencies to support this goal; - Measures to accelerate digitalization and approaches to regulating artificial intelligence (AI); - The state of the current global economic governance architecture. During the discussions and interactions with partners the Russian delegation: ☑️ Supported the focus of the presidency on addressing accumulated imbalances in the global economy; ☑️ Advocated for the critical importance of unobstructed trade for development and global food security; ☑️ Emphasized the need to utilize all effective technologies in the energy sector; ☑️ Stressed the primacy of interstate cooperation in the ICT field, including the regulation of AI. 🤝A joint meeting of the Sherpas and representatives of the G20 finance ministries and central banks also took place. 🇿🇦The discussions focused on finding sources of financing for the ambitious initiatives were proposed by South Africa. The UN Secretary-General, A. ❤️On December 6, 2024, the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Cape Town together with ANC Youth Leader in the Western Cape Biula Hevu ahead of the upcoming Christmas holidays, organized a visit to an orphanage located in the Township Khayelitsha in the southern part of Cape Town. 🎗️The visit was part of the Consulate’s traditional charitable initiativeaimed at supporting children who have lost parental care. 🎁During the visit, Consulate staff provided the children with essential food supplies, school uniform, household appliances as well as holiday gifts and toys. 🔨The director of the orphanage showed the results of extensive repairs of the burnt building carried out with the support of the Consulate General of Russia. 🏠Two years ago, the building was completely destroyed by fire, and now with the construction materials provided by the Consulate last year, the necessary restoration works have been fulfilled and the infrastructure of the orphanage was completely renewed. 💬“It is always a great honor for us to help children who find themselves in difficult situations, especially during such an important and warm time as Christmas. We are glad to contribute to the restoration of the orphanage and provide children with essential items for their comfortable living and education,” said the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Cape Town. 🇿🇦🇷🇺The orphanage continues its important work, providing shelter, care, and education to children who have suffered the loss of their families. 💬Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks during the 43rd meeting of the Foreign Ministry’s Council of Heads of Constituent Entities of the Russian Federation Our today’s agenda focuses on Agricultural Diplomacy for the Regions. This is a very important topic these days. Russia has been performing its obligations under international contracts in good faith. We are among the key actors when it comes to guaranteeing food security. It is quite obvious that in today’s geopolitical environment, being proactive in our diplomatic efforts in the agricultural sector helps forge stronger ties with the countries in the Global South and East, and serves as an effective asset in our foreign policy. We saw this during last year’sRussia-Africa Summit, where President Vladimir Putin put forward several initiatives to supply food and fertilisers to the countries in the Global South which need this kind of assistance. We also saw this in Sochi, at the Sirius centre, which hosted the First Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum. This is a very important topic for the Global Majority, including our friends within BRICS. In June 2024, Moscow hosted the Conference on Food Security and Sustainable Agricultural Development as part of Russia’s BRICS chairmanship. Its participants outlined specific steps for reinforcing our cooperation in this domain. Those taking part in the Kazan Summit supported Russia’s initiative to establish a grain exchange within BRICS and possibly expanding it in the future by adding other agricultural sectors. In this context, the proposal by Tambov Region Head Yevgeny Pervyshov to set up an International Centre for Food Security and Fighting Hunger within the Michurinsk State Agrarian University was quite timely and relevant. Children who attended the event are from the disadvantaged community of Gugulethu. They attend school locally and some of literary programmes of Lumkile's Book Joint.
