News: 44 still missing as 81 victims of deadly #South_Ethiopia region landslides laid to rest At least 81 people have been confirmed dead while 44 remain missing following the devastating landslides that struck parts of #Gamo Zone in South Ethiopia Regional State earlier this month, according to the zone’s chief administrator. On Monday, Dr. Demissie Admasu, Chief Administrator of Gamo Zone, said that 125 people were initially reported missing after landslides hit several areas across four woredas including Mazo Doysa Kebele in Gacho Baba Woreda. He said that the bodies of 81 victims have so far been recovered and funeral services have been conducted, while efforts continue to account for the remaining missing persons. News: At least 15 people killed in clashes in two districts of #Gamo Zone, #Southern_Ethiopia region A member of #Ethiopia’s federal parliament and local residents have told Addis Standard that at least 15 people were killed and property damaged following clashes between security forces and residents in Zayse Wezeka and Zayse Denbel districts in Southern Ethiopia Region. Abraham Amoshe, a lawmaker representing the Zayse electoral district, said the violence began late last week. He stated that operations in the area involved regional riot police, zonal regular police, militias, and former army veterans. The MP said that, so far, 15 bodies had been confirmed across the two districts and alleged that more than 100 people were abducted and taken to unknown locations. News: #Gamo Zone Education Department orders changes to ‘divisive’ content in history textbooks, decries ‘false history’ The Gamo Zone #Education Department has issued a formal directive ordering all secondary schools in the zone to correct what it describes as “deliberately fabricated false stories” about the Gamo people contained in the recently published Grade 9 and Grade 11 national History textbooks. In a letter, dated 29 January 2026, addressed to education offices in 14 woredas and seven city administrations, the department said that the 2023 edition of the textbooks, prepared by the #Federal Ministry of Education, includes content that “threatens the unity of the Gamo people” and reflects the “private political interests” of the authors and editors. The directive instructs teachers to implement “immediate classroom-level corrections” until permanent amendments are made to the textbooks. News: Landslides, flash floods kill at least 30 in #Gamo Zone, South #Ethiopia region, as heavy rains hit highland areas At least 30 people have died after landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall struck highland areas of #Gamo_Zone in the #South_Ethiopia Regional State, local authorities said. The Gamo Zone administration said the disaster followed continuous and unseasonal rains that fell between the night of 09 March and the early morning of 11 March 2026, affecting several kebeles across three woredas. Among the victims were a mother and her two children who were killed instantly when a landslide struck their home in Yela Kebele of Bonke Woreda. The father survived but sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment at Bonke Gazeso Health Center.
