Inizia così il comunicato stampa congiunto Kuwait-Vaticano, diffuso in queste ore. Nel testo, si precisa che durante la visita del Segretario di Stato, "si terrà un giro di colloqui ufficiali con Sua Altezza lo Sceicco Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Primo Ministro dello Stato del Kuwait". La visita "si inserisce nelle celebrazioni per la proclamazione della Chiesa di Nostra Signora d'Arabia ad Ahmadi, in Kuwait, a Basilica Minore. Essendo la più antica chiesa cattolica dello Stato del Kuwait e della regione del Golfo Persico, questo titolo le è stato conferito da Papa #LeoneXIV il 28 giugno 2025, in riconoscimento del suo significato storico e spirituale nel Golfo Persico. Questa designazione storica, la prima del suo genere nella Penisola Arabica, sottolinea il ruolo unico della chiesa di Nostra Signora d'Arabia come chiesa madre del Kuwait, essendo la prima chiesa cattolica mai costruita nel Paese. La cappella originale fu costruita nel 1948 e la chiesa attuale fu completata nel 1957 come generoso dono dei donatori locali, la cui cura e il cui sostegno al complesso ecclesiastico continuano ancora oggi". Lo Stato del Kuwait, continua il comunicato, "riafferma i suoi saldi principi di rispetto reciproco e di coesistenza pacifica tra le religioni, valori sanciti nei suoi ideali fin dal suo inizio e successivamente codificati nella sua Costituzione". Con l'occasione si ricorda anche la storica visita compiuta dal defunto Emiro dello Stato del Kuwait, lo Sceicco Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, al Successore di Pietro il 6 maggio 2010, che ha costituito una pietra miliare importante nel corso delle relazioni tra Kuwait e Santa Sede. "Tale visita ha avuto luogo nell'ambito di una serie di scambi ufficiali ad alto livello, sottolineando l'impegno della leadership kuwaitiana nel rafforzare la comunicazione e il dialogo con la Santa Sede, essendo stata preceduta nel 2009 dalla visita dell'ex Primo Ministro, lo Sceicco Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, e seguita nel 2015 dalla visita dell'ex Primo Ministro, lo Sceicco Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah". La solenne celebrazione della proclamazione della Basilica Minore avrà luogo ad Ahmadi venerdì 16 gennaio 2026, alle ore 10.00, e, come anticipato, sarà presieduta dal Cardinale Parolin. La visita del porporato mira a rafforzare i legami di amicizia e cooperazione che la Santa Sede e lo Stato del Kuwait hanno mantenuto fin dall'instaurazione delle relazioni diplomatiche nel 1968, quando il Kuwait divenne il primo Paese del Consiglio di Cooperazione per gli Stati Arabi del Golfo a stabilire tali relazioni con la Santa Sede. La visita intende anche testimoniare la lunga tradizione di convivenza religiosa che ha costantemente caratterizzato lo Stato del Kuwait all'interno del Golfo Arabico.
