🗞 Russia’s Ambassador to Thailand Evgeny Tomikhin’s article“Russia-ASEAN Ties Set Standard” published in Bangkok Post (October 15, 2025) Key points: ✍️ For over a quarter of a century, Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (#ASEAN) have nurtured a unique partnership that has not only stood the test of time but has also evolved into a strategic pillar of regional stability. Today, as the international order transitions towards multipolarity, our dialogue partnership represents a model of how states can cooperate on the basis of equality, mutual respect, and shared benefit. • The designation of Russia–ASEAN relations as a Strategic Partnership in 2018 was a recognition of accumulated trust and shared objectives. It signalled our joint commitment to address pressing regional and global issues, including security, development, education, science, and culture. Importantly, the partnership has always been premised on ASEAN centrality — a principle that Russia fully respects. • The Comprehensive Plan of Action to the ASEAN and Russia Strategic Partnership (2021-2025) is being actively implemented. There are numerous joint projects and programmes in the fields of culture, sports, education and science. <...> Since 2024, Russia has officially become an ASEAN Digital Partner. It is a significant step towards the development of technological innovation and digital cooperation between Russia and ASEAN. • Russia and ASEAN countries share a common vision. It is an approach of a multipolar world based on sovereign equality and inviolability of international law. It is precisely this convergence that allows our partnership to flourish. We do not dictate to one another — on the contrary, we engage in dialogue. We do not seek to create exclusive blocs; we build bridges. • Russia's concept of the Greater Eurasian Partnership proposed by President Vladimir Putin offers a framework for linking integration processes across the continent — from the Eurasian Economic Union to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (#SCO), #BRICS and ASEAN. Rather than replacing existing mechanisms, it aims to create synergies, reduce fragmentation and promote connectivity in trade, energy, infrastructure and people-to-people contacts. 🇷🇺🇱🇦 On June 10, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrovmet with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Saleumxay Kommasith in the BRICS Plus/Outreach format on the sidelines of the #BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in Nizhny Novgorod. During the meeting, the Ministers discussed the state of Russia-Laos strategic partnership, as well as the prospects for further advancement. They focused on the implementation of agreements reached following talks between the Leaders of the two countries in Moscow on May 9. The discussion also covered regional and global issues of mutual interest, as well as the #RussiaASEAN Dialogue Partnership in the context of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic’s chairmanship of #ASEAN in 2024. Additionally, they exchanged views on interaction within the #SCO and other multilateral formats, including BRICS. The conversation took place in a friendly and trust-based atmosphere, which is a traditional feature of Russia-Laos relations. #RussiaLaos

🇷🇺 The Russian Federation welcomes the accession of the Republic of Indonesia to #BRICS as a full-fledged participantfrom January 1, 2025. The candidacy of Indonesia was submitted and approved in advance during the first phase of BRICS’ expansion at the Summit in Johannesburg, the Republic of South Africa, in 2023. However, in the context of the 2024 presidential elections, Indonesian partners decided to postpone Jakarta’s official request pending the inauguration of the new head of state and the appointment of the government. During Russia’s BRICS chairship in 2024, the Republic of Indonesia submitted an official request for joining BRICS. The document was examined in accordance with the guiding principles, standards, criteria and procedures for BRICS membership expansion. All BRICS states agreed, by consensus, to support the Indonesian bid. 🇮🇩#Indonesia, the largest economy and most populous nation in Southeast Asia, shares BRICS values, advocates multilateral cooperation based on the principles of mutual respect, openness, pragmatism, solidarity and consensus. Indonesia’s accession to BRICS will help enhance the group’s authority and prestige still further and will also facilitate the consistent consolidation of the Global South and East for forging a more equitable and well-balanced multipolar world order.

For two weeks, the competitions will bring together over 3,000 athletes from almost 100 states. I am confident that this large-scale sports festival will demonstrate the triumph of universal values of sport, equal opportunities and an honest and uncompromising struggle. The hospitable, distinctive and unique Kazan and Moscow are hosting the BRICS Sports Games. These cities boast a rich history, a multi-ethnic culture and traditions. At the same time, these modern cities are gearing for the future. All this aligns with the spirit and nature of BRICS, an association of sovereign countries which are developing dynamically, yet retain their identity. They jointly address large-scale objectives and provide an example of truly partner-like and equitable relations, based on trust, strong friendship and respect for each other’s interests. ☝️ I would like to note that the Sports Games, held under the auspices of our organisation, are an important part of multilateral political, economic and humanitarian interaction. The role of BRICS in global affairs continues to increase rapidly. All the more so as they will be held in an open format for the first time this year. The Games will become yet another symbol of expanding inter-cultural dialogue, making a weighty contribution to strengthening friendship among nations and facilitating interstate interaction in the interests of people and universal development.
