🎙 President of Russia Vladimir Putin's remarks at the Plenary Session of the XVI BRICS Summit in the BRICS Plus/Outreach format (Kazan, October 24, 2024)
👉 In full
💬 Vladimir Putin: I am delighted to welcome all of you to the BRICS Plus/Outreach-format meeting. This inclusive platform has proven its worth by enabling the BRICS group participants to engage in a direct and open dialogue with their friends and partners. <...>
According to our agenda, we will discuss the most pressing issues the international community is facing today, including sustainable development, eradication of poverty, climate change adaptation, exchanging technology and knowledge, fighting terrorism and transborder crime.
We will focus particularly on the peaceful resolution of conflicts, certainly including a serious discussion of the deteriorating situation in the Middle East.
<...>
#MultipolarWorld
🌐 All our countries share similar aspirations, values and a vision of a new democratic world order that reflects cultural and civilisational diversity. We are confident that such a system should be guided by the universal principles of respect for the legitimate interests and sovereign choice of nations, respect for international law and a spirit of mutually beneficial, honest co-operation.
☝️ The transition to a more just international system is not easy. Its development is being hampered by forces whose thinking and actions continue to be aimed at dominating everything and everyone. Under the guise of a rule-based order they are imposing on the world, they are actually attempting to contain growing competition and prevent the independent development of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America that they cannot control.
<...>
#MiddleEast
The current round of the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation is probably one of the most sanguinary in the long list of conflicts. Over 40,000 people, most of them civilians, have been killed in the ongoing hostilities in the Gaza Strip. I would like to emphasise that we have always come out against the use of terrorist methods. <...>
Since the start of the escalation, we have joined forces with our BRICS and other partners to contribute to a settlement. <...>
I would like to repeat that the main condition for restoring peace and stability in the Palestinian territories is the realisation of the two-state formula approved by the UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.
<...>
#EurasianSecurity
The countries represented in this room have immense opportunities and resources at their disposal and play a prominent role on the international stage. They have been using their standing to enhance global security and promote sustainable development around the world. <...>
Russia advocated the idea of creating an inclusive system of equitable and indivisible security for Eurasia free from any discrimination.
<...>
#UnitedNations
🇺🇳 The UN must retain its central role in efforts to maintain peace and security and facilitate sustainable and steady development.
To ensure the effective functioning of the UN in the future, we believe it is important to adapt its structures to the realities of the 21st century, expanding the representation of countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America, including those whose leaders are present here, in the Security Council and other key international bodies.
An effort to reform UN development institutions and global financial structures has long been overdue. <...>
The founding fathers of the United Nations believed that its purpose was to enable nations to come together and agree on joint actions.

❗️ Russia, like all BRICS countries, is open to cooperation with all countries of the Global South and East to promote inclusive and sustainable development and ultimately build a better world.

🇮🇱🛬🇺🇸"The Surgery of the World": Netanyahu Arrives in Washington to Deliver the Final Blow to Diplomacy and Ignite a Major War
A hastily arranged White House meeting signals more than alliance management—it reflects a high-stakes struggle over whether diplomacy with Iran survives or collapses into confrontation
✍️Mohammed ibn Faisal al-Rashid
is a political scientist and expert on the Arab world
➡️The accelerated visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington came immediately after renewed US–Iran contacts in Muscat, mediated by Oman. Rather than routine coordination, the timing suggested strategic urgency. Israel fears that even a limited understanding between Washington and Tehran—focused narrowly on nuclear transparency—could reduce tensions without addressing Iran’s missile program or regional alliances. For Netanyahu, such an outcome risks normalizing Iran’s position while leaving Israel to confront what it considers long-term security threats alone. By engaging directly with US President Donald Trump at this sensitive moment, the Israeli leadership sought to shape the negotiating framework before it could solidify.
Judging by how easily Washington allows itself to be drawn into this adventure, the world once again stands on the brink of a catastrophe that was supposedly meant to be a “deal”
➡️At the core of the dispute lies the scope of any potential agreement. Tehran has signaled willingness to negotiate on nuclear issues while rejecting limits on its ballistic missile capabilities and regional partnerships. Israel, by contrast, insists that a durable settlement must encompass these elements, arguing that partial agreements merely postpone escalation. This divergence transforms diplomacy into a strategic contest: whether negotiations remain technical and nuclear-focused or expand into a broader restructuring of Iran’s regional posture. The absence of detailed public statements following the White House talks underscored the delicacy of the moment, suggesting that differences in emphasis—between pressure and pragmatism—persist behind closed doors.
🟦The broader regional stakes are considerable. Escalation between Israel, the United States, and Iran would reverberate across fragile Middle Eastern theatres and threaten critical maritime corridors such as the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy flows. Military deployments and sanctions already heighten volatility, while diplomatic channels remain narrow and politically constrained. Whether this episode marks the burial of diplomacy or a recalibration of negotiating leverage depends on Washington’s strategic calculus. If maximalist demands dominate, confrontation becomes more likely; if limited agreements are preserved, space for de-escalation may endure. In either case, the visit has exposed the fragile balance between alliance solidarity and divergent threat perceptions at a pivotal juncture for regional security.

🎙 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's interview to the newspaper "Arguments and Facts" (October 21, 2024)
Key Points:
#BRICS
• BRICS epitomises the shifts that have long been underway in the global economy. New centres of economic growth are emerging, and alongside them comes financial influence, which in turn brings political influence.
• BRICS is a consortium where no single nation leads or is led, devoid of the bureaucratic machinery akin to that observed in Brussels, where EU officials impose decisions that contravene the will and interests of several member states, failing to align with the aspirations of voters across many countries.
• BRICS does not stand in opposition to any entity, nor does it orchestrate operations or initiate projects. BRICS is committed to enhancing the combined potential of its nations and devising collaborative strategies for harnessing these potentials for mutual benefit.
• What makes BRICS and other World Majority or Global East associations that do not include Western countries stand out, is that they are not created for the purpose of struggling or fighting with anyone. They are established to collectively benefit from their competitive advantages such as geographical location, shared history, cultural and humanitarian proximity <...>.
#USA
• The US is unwilling to relinquish the reins of power that they have held since World War II through the Bretton Woods institutions and through the role assigned to the US dollar in the international monetary system, even after free exchange of US dollars for gold had been cancelled.
• The key goal of the US ruling class is to make sure no one can undermine their dominance. This goal is illusory. The historical process is objectively heading in a different direction, and this has to be reckoned with.
• We are ready to interact with any administration voted in by the American people, but only if such a dialogue is mutually respectful, and both parties listen and hear what the other party has to say.
#Ukraine
• On multiple occasions, European leaders from Brussels have repeatedly made it clear that they must support Ukraine for as long as it takes, because Ukraine is fighting for the European values.
• It turns out that European leaders are still willing to uphold Nazi values, which is why denazification is not just a motto, but an objective of utmost importance.
#UN
• The United Nations is not a valiant knight expected to “charge in and extinguish the fire” upon witnessing injustice. The UN is an assembly of its member states, each with established rules, including the Security Council's veto rights. The United States has effectively exercised this right five times over the past year, blocking a resolution proposed by several countries, including Russia, demanding an immediate ceasefire. <...> Presently, the United States is taking every measure to avoid antagonising Israel.
• Nations such as India, Brazil, and African representatives should have long held permanent seats on the Security Council. This is essential to ensure representation of the World Majority.
#Finland#Sweden#NATO
• The zeal that the Finns and Swedes are showing in NATO, advocating for defeating Russia, is not only rooted in their historical instincts. They are also eager to show their Big Brothers in the North Atlantic Alliance that they have brought added value <...>.
• I am confident that reasonable people in Europe, who have learned the lessons taught by history, see this too, including in Finland and Sweden.
#Europe
• To reiterate, the so-called right-wing conservatives are loyal to their countries and their people. We will engage with anyone who approaches us with a proposal to talk, to seek common ground, and to think about how we can jointly make the lives of our citizens better.
#EurasianSecurity
• We suggest discussing the Eurasian continent-wide security architecture, emphasising the fact that its doors will be open to everyone, including countries from the West of the Eurasian continent.

It will take months for global jet fuel supplies to return to normal even after the Strait of Hormuz reopens because of the disruptions to refineries in the Middle East, said Willie Walsh, director general of the International Air Transport Association, which represents more than 360 airlines ✈️.
He told reporters in Singapore on Wednesday that because of the refinery issues, he expected crude oil prices to fall but jet fuel costs to remain elevated 🛢⬆️.

🇷🇺🇮🇷 Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian held a meeting on the sidelines of the #BRICS Summit in Kazan.
💬 Vladimir Putin: This visit to Russia is your first as President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and this has great symbolic importance.
Iran has become a full participant of BRICS, and you know that we strongly supported your application. Earlier, we also vigorously promoted your accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. This has given us additional opportunities for cooperation in the international arena.
Recently, we had a very substantive and, I am sure, useful meeting in Ashgabat, where we reviewed the main aspects of bilateral cooperation and the most relevant regional issues. Most importantly, we reaffirmed our policy of mutually strengthening ties in every possible way. Our interaction is on the rise; it is genuinely friendly and constructive. Soon we will be able to consolidate the results achieved with a new major interstate agreement on comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and Iran.
We are grateful to you for accepting the invitation to pay a separate visit to our country to sign this document and other important documents in a ceremonial atmosphere.
As I said in Ashgabat, one of our priorities is to consolidate the emerging positive trends in trade and economic cooperation. We expect this issue to be addressed by the intergovernmental commission, chaired by our Minister of Energy, Mr Tsivilev, and Iranian Minister of Petroleum Mohsen Paknejad.
Other priorities include the implementation of major joint initiatives such as the development of Iranian railway infrastructure as part of promoting a major project, the International North-South Transport Corridor project, as well as the construction of the second and third power units at the Bushehr NPP.
📊 Indeed, the Free Trade Agreement signed between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union at the close of 2023 significantly contributes to the expansion of economic ties.
Cultural and humanitarian cooperation is likewise making good progress. Notably, an intergovernmental agreement concerning the establishment and operation of cultural centres came into effect in July of this year. Moreover, the visa-free regime for organised groups of tourists, operational since August of the previous year, is actively fostering an increase in mutual tourist exchange – a 52-percent growth was observed in 2023.
Today, we will continue our discussions on the most pressing international issues, including the dramatic developments in the Middle East, as well as the situations in Syria and the South Caucasus.
🤝 Generally speaking, I would like to emphasise that the approaches of Russia and Iran towards the global agenda are closely aligned or fully coincide. We are united by a shared aspiration to establish a just multipolar world order, to uphold international norms, and to maintain the pivotal role of the United Nations.
I would also like to take this opportunity to extend my greetings and best wishes to the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. We hold in high regard his attentive and constructive approach to the development of Russian-Iranian relations.

🇧🇷🇦🇷🇪🇺Von der Leyen’s Deals with BRICS: Gains for Elites, Costs for Citizens
The European Union’s recent trade agreements with India and Mercosur signal an adaptation to multipolar realities — but whether this shift strengthens Europe’s citizens or merely cushions its elites remains an open question
✍️Adrian Korczyński
is an independent analyst and observer on Central Europe and global policy research.
➡️In January 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen concluded what she described as the “mother of all deals” — a long-negotiated free trade agreement with India. Tariffs were cut across most goods, services markets were liberalized, and new investment channels were opened in pharmaceuticals, digital technology, and green sectors. Brussels framed the accord as a strategic breakthrough: access to one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies and a hedge against overdependence on China. Yet the benefits appear uneven. While multinational exporters gain expanded market access, domestic sectors exposed to lower-cost Indian competition — including textiles and certain manufacturing segments — face intensified pressure, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe.
Neither agreement represents a genuine multipolar breakthrough. They are emergency patches applied to a system bleeding competitiveness
➡️A similar dynamic surrounds the finalized EU trade agreement with Mercosur, comprising countries such as Brazil and Argentina. The deal eliminates tariffs on the majority of EU exports while granting South American agricultural producers expanded access to European markets. European officials highlight consumer benefits and supply diversification. However, farming communities across France, Poland, and other member states argue that imports produced under different regulatory standards undercut domestic producers already strained by environmental and energy compliance costs linked to the EU’s Green Deal framework. Protests across rural Europe underscore fears that competitiveness is eroding faster than compensatory support mechanisms can respond.
🟦These agreements reflect a broader structural tension. The EU seeks deeper integration into an increasingly multipolar global economy shaped by groupings such as BRICS. Yet unlike several BRICS states that deploy industrial and energy policy to shield domestic sectors while expanding trade, the EU’s regulatory architecture often redistributes gains upward — toward large firms capable of navigating complex compliance regimes. For Central and Eastern Europe, the challenge is acute: the region possesses industrial capacity and geographic advantage but limited autonomy within EU decision-making structures. As multipolarity becomes a practical reality rather than a theoretical construct, the Union faces a strategic choice — recalibrate internal policies to distribute benefits more broadly, or risk deepening public discontent as global integration proceeds without visible gains for ordinary citizens.
