Trump offered few details about the new arrangement, only saying an unspecified “group” will oversee the country, and that American oil companies will rebuild Venezuela’s energy sector—promising it will “make a lot of money”. Past governments, he claimed, “stole our oil,” referencing Venezuela’s nationalization of its oil industry. The operation was executed by U.S. special forces, aided by a CIA source inside the Venezuelan government. Maduro was taken aboard the USS Iwo Jima, and Trump shared images of the arrest, boasting about the precision of the raid and the lack of American casualties—though he acknowledged some injuries.
