Stalled Integration Efforts to integrate the SDF into Syria’s national military have stalled repeatedly, fueling tensions that have now boiled over into open conflict. Each side blames the other for breaking cease-fire agreements, and mutual distrust runs deep. The SDF controls much of northeastern Syria, and the central government—led by former Islamist rebels—struggles to win the loyalty of minority communities like the Kurds and Alawites.
