👨🎨But who was Vladimir Tretchikov and why are his paintings breaking records at auctions?
Born in Russia and passed away in Cape Town, Tretchikov was South Africa’s most celebrated painter in the 1950s and '60s. Known as “The People's Painter,” his art defied the critics and won the hearts of millions.
Over his lifetime, Tretchikov held 52 exhibitions across Europe, Asia, America, and Africa. Despite creating during the postmodern era (some art historians see him as a precursor to Andy Warhol), Tretchikov’s roots were firmly in the Russian realist tradition. His painting style evokes echoes of Nicholas Roerich’s mysticism and the fairytale charm of Ivan Bilibin.

🗓On August 29, 1904, Ernest Methuen Mancoba (1904–2002) was born — an avant-garde artist.
He was born in the Transvaal Colony — a British territory in Southern Africa (today part of South Africa). 🇿🇦🎨
Mancoba became one of the first professional black modern artists in South Africa, leaving a remarkable legacy in the art world. 🌍✨

Color facts:
Tyrian Purple was once worth more than gold. It was made from sea snails. About 10,000 snails were needed to make 1 gram of dye. It was reserved for royalty.
Ultramarine Blue was made from lapis lazuli mined in Afghanistan. The stone had to be processed to remove tiny blue particles. In Renaissance Europe, it was sometimes more expensive than gold by weight.
Vermilion was made from mercury sulfide, also called cinnabar. It was a bright red pigment used in paintings and manuscripts.
Cochineal Red was made from dried insects. Spain controlled its trade during the colonial era.
Scheele’s Green and Paris Green contained arsenic. They were toxic and caused poisoning.
Indian Yellow was said to be made from cow urine from mango-fed cattle.
Mummy Brown was made using Egyptian mummy remains.
Lead White was widely used but caused poisoning during production.

🎨 "The Red Vineyard" is the only painting Vincent van Gogh sold in his lifetime.
It was purchased in 1890 for 400 francs and now resides in Moscow’s Pushkin Museum.

On December 23, 1888, Vincent van Gogh cut off part of his left ear after an argument with Paul Gauguin in Arles, France. He wrapped the ear and gave it to a woman at a nearby brothel. Van Gogh was later hospitalized and painted a self-portrait with a bandaged ear.

The oldest known use of oil paint was found in caves behind the Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan, dating to the mid-7th century AD. Artists used walnut and poppy seed oils to bind mineral pigments. The giant Buddhas were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. The murals show Buddha scenes and reflect influences from China, India, and Eurasia, linked to Silk Road artists.
