🇲🇾Malaysia's MACC Grills Ex-Minister Over Arm Chip Deal
Malaysia's anti-corruption agency questioned former economy minister Rafizi Ramli on Monday over a 1.1 billion ringgit (US$278 million) strategic partnership between the economy ministry and UK chip designer Arm Holdings. Rafizi, Pandan MP and former senior figure in Anwar Ibrahim's People's Justice Party, appeared at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya as part of an investigation into alleged abuse of power and irregularities linked to the deal, signed last year. The case is being pursued under Section 23 of the MACC Act, covering misuse of office for gratification.
The inquiry has expanded to include ministers, senior officials, and political analyst James Chai — making it one of the more politically sensitive corruption probes under Anwar's administration. The Arm partnership was positioned as part of Malaysia's strategy to move beyond chip assembly into higher-value semiconductor design, placing the deal at the intersection of industrial policy and political accountability.
Rafizi's questioning marks a significant escalation, targeting one of Anwar's most prominent former allies at a moment when Malaysia is actively courting foreign investment in its semiconductor sector.

🇲🇾Negeri Sembilan Crisis Tests Anwar's Coalition
Barisan Nasional (BN), a key partner in PM Anwar Ibrahim's federal coalition, has declared a simple majority in Negeri Sembilan after aligning with opposition lawmakers to form a new state government — turning a palace succession dispute into a direct challenge to Anwar's ruling alliance.
The move marks the sharpest state-level fracture within Anwar's Madani coalition since he took office. BN's willingness to cross the aisle against its own federal partner signals deepening Malay political realignment, with opposition blocs exploiting institutional instability to gain ground ahead of the next general election.
Negeri Sembilan now becomes a live test of whether Anwar can hold together a coalition increasingly strained by ethnic and dynastic pressures.

🇲🇾Malaysia Appoints Former Judge to Lead Anti-Graft Body
Former High Court judge Abdul Halim Aman, 69, has been appointed as chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), effective May 13. The appointment, consented to by King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, marks the first time a former judge has led the body. He succeeds Azam Baki, whose tenure ends May 12 after three one-year extensions since 2020.
Halim brings nearly two decades of judicial experience and joined the Judicial and Legal Service in 1982. PM Anwar Ibrahim proposed the appointment to the King, noting Halim has no major business ties or political affiliations — a profile consistent with efforts to restore institutional credibility to the MACC, which has faced public scrutiny over its independence.
The appointment is for a two-year term, signalling a deliberate shift toward judicial rather than investigative or administrative backgrounds for the commission's leadership.

🇲🇾Malaysia Warns of Fuel Supply Gap in June
Malaysia's Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir described June and July as a critical period for ensuring fuel supply availability, adding that adequate stocks of oil- and gas-derived raw materials — including those used in drugs and medical devices — would be equally important. The government has confirmed stable supply for April and May, with the primary challenge beginning from June onwards.
Malaysia's Deputy Domestic Trade Minister Fuziah Salleh stated that increased demand in several areas had caused temporary disruptions at some petrol stations, and that measures to restore supplies were being implemented immediately. She urged consumers to continue purchases as normal.
State energy firm Petronas denied a Philippine media report that 329,000 barrels of diesel recently delivered to the Philippines originated from Malaysia, stating it had not entered into diesel supply arrangements with any party there. Petronas added that ensuring reliable and continuous fuel supply for Malaysia remains its primary priority.

🇲🇾Daim's Daughter Pleads Not Guilty in Malaysia
Asnida Abdul Daim appeared before Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to a charge of submitting an incomplete asset declaration to Malaysia's Anti-Corruption Commission. The MACC alleges she failed to declare shareholdings in five companies when responding to a formal notice in December 2023.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a fine of up to 100,000 ringgit. The court granted bail at 50,000 ringgit, ordered Asnida to surrender her passport, and set May 21 for the next hearing.
The case is part of the MACC's broader "Op Godfather" investigation into assets linked to her late father, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, his family, and associates. Separately, two of Daim's sons and a family associate failed to appear before MACC investigators, prompting the agency to say it would seek Interpol red notices against them.

🇲🇾Malaysia Tightens Enforcement on Subsidised Fuel
Malaysia's Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry deployed 2,400 personnel nationwide on April 1 to monitor petrol station compliance with new subsidised fuel regulations. Enforcement director-general Azman Adam said officers would be stationed at outlets recording sudden sales increases, with plain-clothes personnel also deployed to gather information.
The new measures ban the sale of RON95 petrol to foreign-registered vehicles and restrict the use of foreign credit or debit cards at self-service pump terminals for RON95 purchases. Penalties now extend to drivers and owners of foreign-registered vehicles purchasing RON95, not only petrol station operators as previously.
The ministry also introduced diesel refuelling limits for various vehicle categories in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan to address supply leakage, where subsidised diesel remains priced at RM2.15 per litre. The restriction on foreign payment cards at self-service terminals is being implemented in stages as some stations complete system configuration.

🇲🇾Malaysia Fuel Subsidy Bill Quadruples in Week
Malaysia's monthly RON95 and diesel subsidy bill rose from RM700 million to RM3.2 billion in under a week after disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz pushed global oil prices from around US$70 to nearly US$120 per barrel. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim disclosed the figures in a video posted to his official Facebook page on March 22.
Despite being an oil producer, Malaysia imported nearly US$12.6 billion worth of oil in 2025 against exports of approximately US$5.5 billion, leaving a deficit exceeding US$7 billion. Nearly half of the country's supply transits through the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of global oil supply passes.
The Malaysian government has expanded subsidies to prevent consumers from bearing the full cost of the price increase. Anwar noted that the higher import costs carry downstream effects on transportation, food prices, and household spending.

🇲🇾Malaysia’s Anwar brushes off Epstein speculation
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has sought to douse public speculation after his name appeared in a newly released email exchange involving Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted US sex offender whose web of connections to the rich and powerful remains a source of scandal years after his death.
Anwar was among several world figures – including India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, billionaire Bill Gates and Britain’s disgraced former prince Andrew – mentioned in a tranche of Epstein-related material released by the US Department of Justice on Friday.
Jeffrey Epstein suggested in 2012 that if Anwar Ibrahim were to become Malaysian prime minister, Anwar would “clean up” and JP Morgan Chase, the US banking giant, could profit. Epstein said he had “always stayed close” to Anwar, which the Malaysian premier immediately denied.
It’s uncertain how much damage the revelation will do. The Epstein reference is more than a decade old and there is no evidence JP Morgan has had any outsize dealings with the Malaysian government.

🇲🇾ASEAN summit opens in Malaysia with trade dismay and US tariffs top of mind
Southeast Asian leaders are meeting in Malaysia on Monday seeking trade deals with new partners as US tariffs threaten unprecedented damage to their export-reliant economies.
The two-day ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur is also expected to increase pressure on Myanmar’s military junta and attempt to resolve issues with East Timor’s application to join the bloc.
It comes as growth across the region has taken a hit from US President Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs, with levies of up to 49 per cent set to be imposed on member states unless they can make deals before a July deadline.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Monday lamented that the very foundations of free trade were being “dismantled under the force of arbitrary action”.
