🗓️ MILESTONE | January 23, 1958 is often remembered as the day Venezuela regained democracy. The reality is more complex. A mass civic-military uprising, shaped by a broad political front and driven by workers, students, trade unions, and popular sectors, brought down a dictatorship and opened a moment of profound democratic expectation. That convergence made the rupture possible. Yet within months, the horizon narrowed: an elite pact stabilized power, sidelined popular forces, reoriented the political order toward foreign interests, and launched widespread persecution against communists and leftist forces. This carousel revisits January 23 not as a closed chapter, but as a living historical dispute between popular mobilization and elite accommodation, sovereignty and dependency, democracy from below and democracy administered from above.
