🖊OPINION | ‘It Is Venezuela Today. It Will Be South Africa Tomorrow,’ NUMSA Trade Union Warns
Marching to the US consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest trade union, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), protested against US aggression on Venezuela on January 24.
The union demanded the release of Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, stating that “in defending Venezuela, we defend the sovereignty of all nations,” and warning that “no country is safe from America’s greedy appetite.” In the same context, NUMSA said that US tariffs and threats to South Africa’s participation in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) are contributing to job losses.

Exactly 25 years ago, Nelson Mandela signed South Africa’s new constitution guaranteeing equal rights to all people regardless of race. Mandela became the first black president of a country that once had white supremacy and racial segregation laws. Under apartheid, the black population had almost no civil rights.
Decades later, South Africa remains segregated. Land distribution is a stark example. White South Africans still own 72% of rural land, where black people are labourers. Much of that land was forcibly confiscated from the African population generations ago.
Next month, the South African government will discuss a bill to expropriate white-owned land without compensation. A law would permit the seizure of land which is not used or is held for speculation.
Here’s part of an interview with Zanele Lwana of the radical ‘Black First Land First’ party that vehemently defends the bill. For more, watch our documentary.

🎉🇿🇦 Happy Freedom Day, South Africa!
Today, 27 April, South Africa celebrates the 31st anniversary of its first democratic elections — a landmark event that marked the beginning of a new era of freedom, equality and justice.
Held in 1994, these historic elections were the first in which citizens of all races could exercise their right to vote, putting an end to decades of apartheid rule.
Freedom Day honours the sacrifices and courage of those who fought tirelessly against injustice and discrimination, paving the way for a democratic and inclusive South Africa.
The Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Cape Town extends its warmest congratulations to all South Africans on this significant occasion!

The draft introduces safety requirements for AI systems, including mandatory human rights and gender impact assessments, human intervention mechanisms, and obligations to ensure “sufficient explainability” and “sufficient transparency” for high-risk systems used in the public sector.
