As MaxArt Foundation is opening its second rhIZOme residency for contemporary artists, we invite you to watch our video tour of the spacious and light-filled art studio in Moscow where we captured the first season. We have also interviewed the artists-in-residence and captured their 'works in progress'. For its second season, the MaxArt Foundation has selected Egor Koryagin, Slava Nesterov, Andrey Pokrovsky, Serafima Sazhina and Polina Shkapina. Coming back with good news — we have released a new interview with Rina Volnykh in honor of her birthday. ODRA Editor-in-Chief and journalist Andrei Savenkov talked to the contemporary artist whose career has been on the rise in Russia in recent years💫 In a humorous and candid manner, Rina talks about such heavyweight topics as whether the Russian contemporary art scene has made any progress on the path to gender equality and how her artistry reflects that household labor has been used as a coping mechanism against domestic abuse.

We have published a second essay as a part of our new column #PostSoviet on the cultural transformations in the former USSR republics over the past 30 years. In the essay, author Anna Domini explores the phenomenon of living in the post-Soviet culture through the metaphor of a sanatorium aka Soviet era resort. According to her, the sanatorium itself is a closed system and it is hard to get out of it, but while it seems exclusively positive for patients, in reality it is a mechanism of suppression of will and freedom.

Only 3 days are left until the end of the Open Call for a new column #PostSoviet, and after having received a lot of applications, ODRA kick-starts the column with an essay on the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt by Marusia Makhmutova, a fashion photographer and collage artist, who has worked with GQ, Esquire, Glamour and Marie Claire Italy. 30 years after the August Coup, Konstantin Makhmutov’s photographs became part of an exhibition at the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center, while Marusia was asked by GQ Russia magazine to reinterpret those images. In her essay, Marusia tells a story of how she felt when she revisited the photos taken by her father.

New article on art editions: ODRA has surveyed industry experts about new challenges in light of Russia’s ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine (use of any other wording by media in Russia can lead to blocking of access, pressure, persecution and fines). This story initially was about a blossoming community of niche print shops and publishers called Soyuz Pechat'. But after the said events, the art editions industry in Russia has faced supply disruptions and price hikes, resulting in closure of Soyuz Pechat'. Read the article to find out whether experts believe there is any hope left for the industry.

Новая рубрика PostSoviet: кто и о чем может туда написать Рубрикапосвящена современному искусству постсоветского пространства: как историческое наследие прошлого века трансформируется и вырабатываются новые ценности, паттерны и так далее. Интересно посмотреть, что происходит с совриском в Грузии, Армении, Узбекистане, Азербайджане, где много русскоговорящих и они когда-то были частью СССР, но все же абсолютно своя локальная специфика. Про российскую культуру в контексте постсоветских трансформаций тоже можно и нужно писать. Зачем? 1) это дает взгляд со стороны на альтернативные стратегии развития искусства последних 30 лет и опыт других территорий из серии "а так можно было" 2) как мы знаем, часть из нас разъехалась по этим самым странам и поэтому: а. многим нужны публикации на английском для интеграции в международное культурное сообщество б. прямо сейчас происходит процесс трансформации, ассимиляции культур; это важно зафиксировать В итоге мы создадим общий архив с разными материалами о культуре постсоветских территорий - аналитические статьи, интервью, обзоры и любые другие форматы Сейчас нам главное продолжать и оставить англоязычный след в международном контексте, реанимировать российскую культуру.
