One of the leading SPb galleries ANNA NOVA now is housing the exhibition of two artists - Ustina Yakovleva (Rus) and Sylvia Javen (Fin) that is dedicated to the concept of psychogeography on the Russian-Finnish border and is open till June 5. 'The Storyteller'is the title of the exhibition that provides with the artists' spatial stories. And it sounds romantic - divided geographically, with Ustina residing in Russia and Silvia in Finland, the artists first met on Kotlin Island, which both separates and simultaneously unites their home countries. Inspired by its secluded environments, Ustina and Sylvia transformed the island’s geographical terrain into an artistic narration – filled with poetic metaphors and their personal emotions. #talkaboutvideoart ODRA has interviewed the members of Roi, an all-female art collective from Russia, which emerged from MMOMA Free Workshops. Their art reflects female identity, Russian traditions and the peculiarities of how residents of a multicultural megapolis interact with nature and the outside world. Roi shared with ODRA their perspectives of video art and how they support and inspire each other in troubled times. Anna Butenko said, 'We ask ourselves each time discussing the video - what is the point of making this or that particular art as a group and not alone? And this is how Melnikov himself described the house: 'A public exhibit of 1920s Soviet architecture with unique significance for the residential dwelling. This experimental-model house organises the work of all the structures, distributing stress both vertically (by the walls), and horizontally (interfloor covering), equally throughout the volume of the building. In the walls the stress is distributed along the oblique network of the cylinder, while the floor also has no concentration of tension, consisting of a latticed, girderless, single organic board forming a circle.'

We have returned from St. Petersburg, delighted with the new site-specific exhibition just in the heart of Liteyny prospect in a semi-abandoned mansion, organized by Maxart Foundation. The exhibition is called 'Monsters under the bed' and it is a reference to fears around and inside of us. So, the choice of location is not random, and old resolate walls themselves evoke horror and scare the ghosts around the corner, but the space plays even stronger with the artists' works from paintigs and sculptures to total installations and video art and the phrase at the end 'I am not on your side', written in red on the glass.

Compare Marusia Makhmutova's collages with the photographs of her father, Konstantin Makhmutov, who captured the 1991 Coup in Moscow. She found the negatives 30 years later, as she calls them 'the treasure, which been waiting for me', and reflected on historical event through the cross-generational prism. 'As I haven’t existed in 1991 yet, my goal was to redefine these pictures through the eyes of a child, who obviously haven’t seen the event itself, but came to know it through the historical sources. But which sources one should believe in? Even now. Especially now. That’s why the first thing I did was to add a simple line next to the photo of the White House — are they bad or good? “We haven’t even asked this type of questions back then, everything seemed unambiguous” - one woman would tell me later. I bought a tank, toy tank, carefully examining and picking the tracks. I covered them with red paint and pressed against the collages.' read more
