🇧🇷🇮🇳BRICS under the Sign of the Lotus: India Takes Up the Baton
India’s BRICS chairmanship seeks continuity and consolidation at a moment of systemic global fragmentation and institutional transition
✍️Author:Anvar Azimov
Diplomat and Political Scientist, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
➡️India formally assumed the BRICS chairmanship in January 2026, presenting the lotus as its official symbol and outlining priorities of sustainability, innovation, cooperation, and development. The choice of the lotus, with petals reflecting the colors of BRICS member states, is intended to convey unity amid diversity and continuity amid expansion, as the association now includes ten members and multiple partner countries. Beyond symbolism, New Delhi’s approach signals an effort to preserve institutional coherence while marking the 20th anniversary of BRICS with initiatives designed to reinforce its political visibility and functional relevance.
The Indians will certainly rely on the support of Russia as one of their most significant strategic partners, which has never let New Delhi down and is ready to coordinate joint and multilateral actions in the interests of the group and the maintenance of international stability as a whole
➡️India’s presidency unfolds against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical tension and growing fragmentation of the international system. In this environment, New Delhi is positioned less as an agenda-setter seeking rapid transformation and more as a stabilizing coordinator focused on consensus management. India’s diplomatic tradition of strategic autonomy and balancing between major powers may translate into a cautious chairmanship aimed at avoiding internal polarization within BRICS, while maintaining constructive engagement with external actors. The emphasis is likely to be on institutional resilience rather than confrontational positioning.
🟦Substantively, India is expected to advance BRICS cooperation in areas where convergence already exists, including reform of international financial institutions, trade facilitation, technological development, and Global South representation. Support from strategic partners, particularly Russia, will remain central to maintaining continuity and coordination within the group. Rather than redefining BRICS, India’s chairmanship appears oriented toward preserving its credibility as a platform for multipolar dialogue, incremental reform, and collective interest articulation in an increasingly unstable global order.

🇷🇺🇱🇦 President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Thongloun Sisoulith held a meeting on the sidelines of the XVI BRICS Summit in Kazan (October 24, 2024)
💬 President Vladimir Putin: Mr President, friends, Once again, I warmly welcome you all and would like to thank you, above all, for your participation in the #BRICS Summit.
We assume that our group is a prototype of multipolarity, a structure that consolidates the Global South and East.
I appreciate your comprehensive remarks. I have warm memories of our meeting in May, when you visited Moscow to participate in the celebrations marking the 79th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. We will be glad to see you in Moscow at the celebrations of the 80th Anniversary of Victory next year. #Victory80
🤝 Our relations are of a mutually beneficial nature and have already reached the level of strategic partnership. This March we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Treaty on Amity, and next year we will celebrate the 65th Anniversary of our diplomatic relations.
The absolute volumes of trade are still modest, but the trend is nevertheless very good, and it is increasing many times over.
We have close positions on most international issues. It is very important that the Lao chairmanship of the #ASEAN promotes its cooperation with Russia, and we are very grateful to you for that.
We are very pleased with your visit, Mr President, and I thank you once again.

🇷🇺🇨🇳On April 14-15, Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov paid an official visit to China.
During the visit, he was received by President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping and held substantive talks with Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi.
📹Statement and answers to media questions by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov following his visit to China
President Xi welcomed the Russian Foreign Minister's visit and spoke highly of the unprecedented level of bilateral relations, highlighting the significant results achieved over 30 years of strategic cooperation, grounded in the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation of July 16, 2001, which has successfully guided ties between the two countries for a quarter of a century.
Sergey Lavrov conveyed warm greetings and best wishes to Xi Jinping from President Vladimir Putin, who is preparing to pay an official visit to China in the first half of the year. Russia’s Foreign Minister underscored the guiding role of leader-level diplomacy in steadily advancing Russia-China ties across all areas.
During his talks with Wang Yi, Sergey Lavrov held an in-depth exchange of views on a broad range of bilateral and international issues of mutual interest.
☝️Particular attention was given to pressing international issues, including the situation around Iran, the Ukraine crisis and developments in Latin America.

🤝 The talks were held in the friendly, trusting and constructive atmosphere that has come to define Russia-China relations.

🎙Opening remarks by Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during talks with President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping:
📍April 15, 2026, Beijing
💬Sergey Lavrov: Mr President, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your warm words addressed to us and for this meeting.
It underscores your personal attention to the development of mutually beneficial strategic relations with Russia, as well as to the agenda that will be discussed at the next summit during the upcoming visit of President Vladimir Putin to China.
Yesterday, my colleague and friend Wang Yi and I held very detailed discussions on preparations for this major upcoming visit.
Thanks to the diplomacy of the two Leaders – yourself and Vladimir Putin – our relations continue to demonstrate a high degree of resilience amid the upheavalsthat have engulfed the modern world both economically and geopolitically. Regrettably, these contradictions are increasingly taking on a military dimension.
Against this backdrop, Russia-China relations, which serve as a stabilizing factor in international affairs, are becoming ever more significant for the rest of the world, for the Global Majority, which seeks not problems or turbulence, but calm conditions for sustainable long-term development. It is in this context that we held detailed discussions and will brief you today on the outcome of our exchange.
Bilateral relations are on the rise in trade, investment, humanitarian affairs, culture and across all other areas. We also discussed regional and international issues, both from the standpoint of future Russia-China coordination on the bilateral track and in terms of our joint work at the #UN, the UN Security Council, the #SCO, #BRICS, the #G20 and #APEC.
As we agreed yesterday,we now haverobust roadmaps for further progress across all tracks identified by you and President Vladimir Putin for the period ahead.

⚡️Comment by Aide to the President Yury Ushakov following President Vladimir Putin’s videoconference with President of China Xi Jinping(February 4, 2026)
Read in full
💬Yury Ushakov: Friends, I would like to brief you on the substantive negotiations between President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, held via videoconference. <...>
The Leaders, in a friendly and trusting manner, summarised the outcomes of the past year and thoroughly discussed plans for the development of Russia-China relations in the current year. <...>
Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping agreed that it is necessary to maintain permanent bilateral consultation mechanisms across all channels – the security councils, foreign ministries, and defence agencies – to complement their personal communication. This pertains to the swift alignment and coordination of approaches on current matters, including sensitive ones, to ensure timely responses to emerging challenges and threats. <...>
Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping once again noted that the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between our two countries are at an unprecedented level, are based on equality and mutual benefit, are not directed against any third parties, and are not subject to short-term political considerations. <...>
📄 On July 16, Russia and China will mark an important date: the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China. This foundational document for international relations, which remains fully relevant and in tune with the spirit of the times, has been automatically extended for a further five-year period.
During the conversation, President Xi Jinping invited Vladimir Putin to pay an official visit to China in the first half of this year. The invitation was accepted with gratitude, and the dates and details will be agreed separately.
The Chinese Leader also invited the President of Russia to take part in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting, to be held in November in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. Russia supports the work of China’s APEC chairmanship, and our President will, of course, be ready to attend the meeting in Shenzhen. <...>
📈 The Leaders paid considerable attention to trade and economic cooperation. It was also mentioned that despite a minor decline due to a number of objective and subjective factors, bilateral trade has been considerably above $200 billion for three years in a row. It is common knowledge that China remains our leading foreign trade partner. <...>
Regarding foreign policy issues, the President of Russia and the President of China emphasised the importance of Russian-Chinese cooperation at multilateral platforms, such as the #UN, the #SCO, #BRICS, #APEC and #G20.
The Sides reaffirmed the common course for creating a just multilateral world order based on international law.
Overall, Moscow and Beijing have been working in coordination with each other on the international stage. It was pointed out that the sides’ positions on the overwhelming majority of international issues are similar or fully coincide. Of course, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping also exchanged views on their countries’ relations with the US. Their approaches almost fully coincide, which is evident from their attitude to the US President’s initiative for creating the Board of Peace.
Regarding the contacts our countries had with the Donald Trump administration — the Leaders believe that there is a window of opportunity in this regard. In particular, the President of China voiced his support for the ongoing talks in Abu Dhabi within the trilateral working group on security matters. <...>
☝️Cooperation between Moscow and Beijing operates as a powerful, constructive and stabilising factor in the world, while the Russia-China nexus effectively enhances global security, and benefits the Global Majority, as well as the people of both Russia and China.

🇷🇺🇹🇷 President of Russia Vladimir Putin's opening remarks during talks with President of Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the #BRICS Summit (Kazan, October 23, 2024)
💬Vladimir Putin: We are very pleased to welcome you to Kazan.
🕯 Before we get started, I would like to express my condolences over the recent terrorist attack. The media are reporting a terrorist attack in Türkiye. You are certainly aware of our stance on this: we condemn any acts of this kind, no matter what the motives may be.
<...>
Russian-Turkish relations are of a good-neighbourly and constructive nature, rooted in a long-standing history of partnership across a wide range of areas. You and I maintain a regular dialogue on current issues on both bilateral and international agendas. I highly value these consistently beneficial interactions. I am confident that our conversation today will be both fruitful and useful.
Naturally, we will discuss ways to enhance trade and economic cooperation, which has been developing very steadily year by year. For instance, last year, the volume of trade was an impressive $55.4 billion and from January to August this year, this figure rose by a further 6.2 percent.
<...>
Strategically significant ties have been established in the energy sector. Russia is a reliable, time-tested supplier of natural gas to Türkiye. Last year, 20.5 billion cubic metres were exported through the Blue Stream and Turkish Stream pipelines.
Preparations are ongoing for the implementation of our initiative to create an international gas hub in Türkiye. I am confident that it will significantly enhance regional energy security, primarily through more balanced pricing mechanisms.
The flagship joint project is the construction of Akkuyu, Türkiye's first nuclear power plant. Work is being conducted simultaneously on all four power units around the clock. <...>
Tourism has traditionally held a special place in our bilateral relations. In 2023, a record 6.3 million Russian tourists visited Türkiye, up 20.7 percent on the year before that. From January to August this year, over 4.5 million people visited Türkiye, an increase of 4.6 percent. Russia ranks first in Türkiye in this regard.
<...>
Of course, we will discuss international issues, including in light of tomorrow’s meeting of BRICS leaders and guest countries and organisations in the BRICS Plus/Outreach format.
Without a doubt, your participation in this event will convey the weighty role Türkiye plays in addressing pressing global issues. Tragic developments in the Middle East are the most pressing item on the international agenda. Russia’s and Türkiye’s principled positions on these matters are very close, and we both believe that a lasting political and diplomatic settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict can only be based on the universally recognised two-state solution approved by the UN Security Council.
