Would appreciate your prayers going into this weekend. We're not equipped for this kind of cold or snow. Our house doesn't even have wall or floor insulation. We've been working on warmer shelters that will hopefully keep thr pigs warm through the blizzard conditions they are forecasting here. Today I took a vacation day from my day job to work on some temporary shelters for our cattle out on pasture. It will be thrown together, but hopefully it works good enough.

Also, just for chatter.... one of the guys that's soon to do solar and lives in three shipping containers here was discussing heating and cooling. He said he has 120v plug in oil heaters because electric heat is the most efficient you can get. I stopped him right there. A heatpump can MOVE heat whereas electric heat has to MAKE heat. I told him the heat pump will do the same heating for 1/5th the energy. He didn't believe it... so I pulled up the recently commissioned system and showed him the whole house lights, tv and heating was pulling 1600w when the temperature was around 40f. His mouth started to drop.... We called that guy on the phone and he explained to my guy that he had 4 minisplits running and the house is about 1400sq ft (140m2). Now my friend is literally gobsmacked. I'm betting he can heat and cool one of his 40ft shipping containers for 170-200w of power.

For anyone wondering.... the recently commissioned solar system has two victron quattro inverters that pull about 250w in total at idle. This appears as heat in the mech room. Naturally when the house is demanding more power the inverters make more heat. So once my guy put a DOOR KNOB on the interior door of his mech room the temperature stayed up. The mech room is 8x8 end of a shipping container and very well insulated. Temperatures here have been between 24f and 40f and the room stays between 58f and 82f. Judging by his 3kw pull right now, I'd say his four minisplits are running wide open.
