The film tells about significant events in the life of one of the most prominent Russian rulers: how the last tsar ascended the throne, won the access to the sea, created an army and a navy and in a just few decades brought the Russian Empire to the world leaders. The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture of South Africa Hon. Gayton McKenzie, members of Parliament, representatives of the consular corps, academic and business circles and media were guests of honour at the event. 👏🏻 Opening the film screening, the Consul General of Russia in Cape Town Mr. Alexei Malenko noted that knowledge of the history of other nations and states is a guarantee of building intensive dialogue and strengthening mutual understanding. Chairman Igor Shuvalov emphasized the importance of deepening multilateral and bilateral ties among financial institutions. "We've agreed on a new framework for cooperation, and we hope Brazil and India will join this initiative soon," Shuvalov stated. 🤝 He also highlighted that the exchange of experience between banks and #BRICS interbank cooperation members is central to their efforts. “VEB.RF presented its main product – a project finance factory program. 🎼From Brazil to South Africa to beyond music fest “BRICS Melody” covering every genre and every style was held in Russia. 🫶🏻Visitors heard the sound of 25 instruments such as Indian sarangi, sitar and tabla, South African umahweyana, djembe, mbira, Arabic oud, Chinese guzheng, Ethiopian krar, Brazilian pandeiro, Iranian daf. 👩🏻‍💻During the three days Ulyanovsk hosted concerts, masterclasses and lectures on the culture and history of the BRICS countries. They were attended by musicians, art historians and ethnographers from Brazil, China, India, Iran, UAE, Russia and South Africa. One of the central events of the festival was a case conference dedicated to the popularisation of traditional music and instruments among young people. 🇷🇺🇿🇦 South African military delegation led by Commander of South African National Defence Force arrives in Moscow to discuss issues on bilateral military cooperation A military delegation of the Republic of South Africa led by Chief of the South African National Defence Force General Rudzani Maphwanya has arrived in Moscow to discuss issues on bilateral military cooperation. The visit began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Aleksandr Garden. This event was led by Commander-in-Chief of the Land Forces General of the Army Oleg Salyukov. The official part of the bilateral talks took place at the Main Directorate for International Military Cooperation of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation, where the parties discussed military cooperation. 'For Russia, cooperation with African partners is strategic and long-term in nature, which includes friendly, secure and equitable relations,' stressed Commander-in-Chief of the Land Forces General of the Army Oleg Salyukov during bilateral talks. During the meeting of the military leaders, agreements were reached on further enhancing cooperation between armed forces of the two countries in various spheres. Also during the visit, the delegation of South Africa will visit military training institutions of the Land Forces, the Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, historical sights, and museums of Moscow and Moscow region. 🔹Russian Defence Ministry

🌍 Our Black History Month timeline would be incomplete without the Soviet period. As the country transitioned from the Russian Empire to the USSR, supporting Africa and people of African origin emerged as a distinctive strand of foreign policy rooted in sincere public sentiment. This was visible as early as in 1920-1930s. Famous singer and London's resident Paul Robeson observed since his first visits to the USSR that strangers on the streets were keen to shake his hands as a sign of solidarity. Referring to Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopia he noted that the head of Soviet diplomacy Maksim Litvinov "stood alone beside Haile Selassie in Geneva". ☝️ Later, support for colonised peoples' liberation movements and cooperation with newly independent states were major official principles of the Soviet foreign policy since 1950s. The USSR proposed a declaration on decolonisation, introduced its first draft and was instrumental in getting the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1960 (the UK, the USA and some others abstained). At the grassroots level, support for the right of self-determination and anti-racism was channeled through the Soviet Afro-Asian Solidarity Committee and promoted through arts. At the same time the USSR welcomed thousands of Africans, and not just civic activists like the British African-Caribbean community leader Claudia Jones. Universities across the country, including iconic Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow, embraced students for them to bring precious knowledge back home. Around 60 thousand of them received Soviet degrees by 1991. 🤝 The material and sentimental legacy of these young men and women is now an integral part of both Russian and African past and present.

Over 40,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed. • The solution can only be found by addressing the root causes, the primary one being the lack of a fully recognized, sovereign Palestinian state.
