Embassy comment We took note of the latest article published today in the Straits Times by its international affairs correspondent Jonathan Eyal entitled “How Trump is already shaping Ukraine’s future – and it is not looking good”. We will not compete with the author in the art of guessing about the consequences of a Trump administration coming to power in the USA and leave it to his conscience... However, we cannot remain silent about the author’s assessments of Russia’s foreign policy, including in relation to the Ukrainian crisis. We regret to note that Mr Eyal’s knowledge in this area is approaching zero. Hence, we conclude, are the accusations against Russia of aggression, imaginary thirst for territorial acquisitions and desire to trample on established norms and destroy the global world order. For those who would like to delve into the topic in more detail and understand Russia’s domestic and foreign policy, we recommend reading excerpts from the plenary session of the 21st annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club dated November 7, 2024 (available at http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/75521). Russian President Mr Vladimir Putin took part in it and set basic principles that should form the foundation for international relations in a new era. Among them are: 1 – openness to cooperation; 2 – recognition of world’s diversity as a prerequisite for its sustainability; 3 – maintaining maximum representativeness in the global process; 4 – understanding the indivisibility of security, i.e. the security of one cannot be ensured at the expense of the security of others; 5 – justice for all, since inequality is the scourge of the modern world; and finally – any sustainable international order can only be based on the principle of sovereign equality. Now, please, compare our principles with the content of Mr Eyal’s article and think about the extent to which it reflects the real pillars of Russia's foreign policy activities. It is difficult to say what is more in Mr Eyal’s propaganda – ignorance or dishonesty – but both are worth condemning.

🗓 On November 9-10, Sochi hosted the First Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum at Sirius University. Instituted by a decision of the Second Russia-Africa Summit in St Petersburg in July 2023, this new dialogue format is called on to become a certain coordinating mechanism for implementing objectives set by the heads of state and government. Along with heads of foreign ministries and executive structures of integration associations, the event brought together sectoral ministers as well as representatives of parliamentary, public, academic and business circles of Russia and African countries, with over 1,500 people attended the event. 🌐 Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov chaired a plenary session, the conference’s high-priority event that involved 54 heads of official delegations from African states and regional integration associations. At the beginning of the plenary session, they read out greetings from the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and Chair of the African Union – President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. The Ministers coordinated their positions on key issues of the international agenda as well as the Russian-African agenda, prioritising the implementation of the Action Plan of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum for 2023-2026. Also, they specified and coordinated long-term guidelines for expanding mutual collaboration still further. 📄 Four joint statements formalised common approaches towards addressing global problems and expanding cooperation with a focus on quality preparations for the Third Russia-Africa Summit: 👉 political statement, 👉 on international information security, 👉 on counter-terrorism measures, 👉 on peaceful use of outer space. The conference’s packed business programme, including 20 panel sessions and specialised events, provided an additional impetus for diverse mutually beneficial cooperation. Experts and high-ranking guests discussed various high-priority issues in great detail, including food security and collaboration in the agro-industrial sector, training specialists for the real economy, geological prospecting, digitalisation, and cooperation in education, healthcare and youth policy. Representatives of the Eurasian Economic Commission and various African associations discussed mutual integration issues. Elaborating on the provisions of the Declaration of the Second Russia-Africa Summit, the sides held specialised meetings on international information security, counter-terrorism efforts, and the prevention of an arms race in outer space. Representatives of Russian and African media outlets took part in an event on measures to combat the manifestations of neo-colonialism. 🤝 Sergey Lavrov met separately with a majority of African delegations on the sidelines of the conference. ✍️ The Officials signed an extensive package of memorandums and agreements between Russia and a number of African states. #RussiaAfrica

🎙 Excerpts from President of Russia Vladimir Putin's speech in the plenary session of the 21st annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club (November 7, 2024) 💬 Vladimir Putin: The moment of truth is fast approaching. The former world arrangement is irreversibly passing away, actually it has already passed away, and a serious, irreconcilable struggle is unfolding for the development of a new world order. It is irreconcilable, above all, because this is not even a fight for power or geopolitical influence. It is a clash of the very principles that will underlie the relations of countries and peoples at the next historical stage. Its outcome will determine whether we will be able, through joint efforts, to build a world that will allow all nations to develop and resolve emerging contradictions based on mutual respect for cultures and civilisations, without coercion and use of force. And finally, whether the human society will be able to retain its ethical humanistic principles, and whether an individual will be able to remain human. At first glance, it might appear that there is no alternative. Yet, regrettably, there is. It is the dive of humanity into the depths of aggressive anarchy, internal and external splits, the erosion of traditional values, the emergence of new forms of tyranny, and the actual renunciation of the classical principles of democracy, along with fundamental rights and freedoms. Increasingly often, democracy is being interpreted not as the rule of majority but of minority. Traditional democracy and the rule of the people are being set against an abstract notion of freedom, for the sake of which, as some argue, democratic procedures, elections, majority opinion, freedom of speech, and an unbiased media can be disregarded or sacrificed. The peril lies in the imposition of totalitarian ideologies and making them the norm, as exemplified by the current state of Western liberalism. This modern Western liberalism, in my view, has degenerated into extreme intolerance and aggression towards any alternative or sovereign and independent thought. Today, it even seeks to justify neo-Nazism, terrorism, racism, and even the mass genocide of civilians. Moreover, there are international conflicts and confrontations fraught with the danger of mutual destruction. Weapons that can cause this do exist and are being constantly improved, taking new forms as the technologies advance. The number of nations possessing such weapons is growing, and no one can guarantee that these weapons will not be used, especially if threats incrementally multiply and legal and moral norms are ultimately shattered. ❗️We have come close to the dangerous point. The West’s calls to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, a nation with the largest arsenal of nuclear weapons, reveal the reckless adventurism of certain Western politicians. Such blind faith in their own impunity and exceptionalism could lead to a global catastrophe. Efforts to cling to their diminishing power through force result only in widespread instability and more tensions, leading to casualties and destruction. However, these efforts fail to achieve the desired outcome of maintaining absolute, unchallenged power. For the march of history cannot be halted. 🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks following the 21st annual session of the Valdai International Discussion Club (Sochi, November 6, 2024) 💬 I was invited to discuss the issue of Eurasian security at the regular annual session of the Valdai International Discussion Club, a matter of great urgency. President Vladimir Putin, in his address at the Russian Foreign Ministry on June 14 this year, outlined the goal of fostering cooperation among the diverse countries and associations of the Eurasian continent. This aims to harmonise their efforts towards ensuring reliable stability, security, and sustainable development. It was underscored that this initiative is open to all countries and entities on the Eurasian continent, including its western sections, without exception. This is not in line with the rules imposed by NATO and the European Union, where Washington and Brussels dictate terms, but rather adheres to the principles spelled out in the UN Charter. These principles are observed within the #EAEU, the #SCO, #ASEAN, and other organisations on our shared continent. It is a commitment to sovereign equality of states, mutual respect for each other's interests, and pursuit of balanced interests to implement constructive projects. <...> Today, we are witnessing these processes materialise swiftly and effectively, establishing a tangible foundation for a continent-wide system of Eurasian security. <...> The process of developing and refining the direction of Eurasian security is proving to be very productive. This was clearly evident at the recent BRICS summit in Kazan, where President Vladimir Putin dedicated a substantial part of his statements to promoting continental partnership among all nations. <...> Today, my colleagues at the Valdai Club and I reached a common conclusion: it was the West's reaction to the independent policies of Russia and other countries, leading to unlawful and aggressive economic sanctions, that fragmented the globalisation system it had crafted and propelled the regionalisation of global life. ☝️ We believe this is a corrective process. It will yield positive effects by ensuring the multipolarity that is increasingly discussed and actively championed by Russia, China, and other #BRICS countries, alongside other associations with our participation on the international stage. In a multipolar world, without a single hegemon but with multiple centres of global development, operations will naturally harmonise through mutual contacts. ⚡️ Russia's Foreign Ministry statement on elections in the United States of America The victory of Donald Trump in the presidential election and his return to the White House after a four-year break obviously reflect Americans’ disappointment in the performance of the Biden administration and the election programme of the Democratic Party formulated by Vice-President Kamala Harris, who was hastily chosen to replace the incumbent President in the race. Despite an overpowering propaganda campaign, which Democrats launched against Donald Trump based on the administrative resource and support from the liberal media, the Republican candidate, who relied on the experience of his previous presidency, highlighted issues that are of real interest to the electorate, namely, the economy and illegal migration, as a counterbalance to the White House’s globalist course. In these circumstances, the ruling group was unable to use the chronically ill American “democracy,” a system, which is outdated, archaic and incompatible with the modern standards of direct, fair and transparent elections, to prevent Kamala Harris’s defeat. At the same time, there is an obvious civil discord in the United States, whose electorate has split into almost equal halves. In fact, we are witnessing confrontation between Democratic and Republican states, and between the advocates of “progressive” and traditional values. It is possible that Donald Trump’s return will fuel internal tensions and bitterness between the confronting camps. ❗️ We have no illusions regarding the President-elect, who is well known in Russia, or the new Congress, where Republicans have reportedly won control. The US ruling political elite adheres to anti-Russia principles and the policy of “containing Moscow.” This line does not depend on changes in America’s domestic political barometer, no matter if it is Trump and his supporters’ “America above all” or the Democrats’ focus on a “rules-based world order.” 🇷🇺🇺🇸 Russia will interact with the new administration when it comes to the White House, firmly upholding Russia’s national interests and working to achieve all the goals of the special military operation. Our conditions have not changed, and Washington is well aware of them.
