Ethiopia's Livestock Production remains overwhelmingly dominated by small-scale producers, who supply more than 98% of the country’s animal products (Begna et al., 2024, p. 507).

#Numbers Ethiopia has one of the largest populations in Africa, second only to Nigeria. It is currently estimated at around 129 million people and is projected by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to reach approximately 190 million by 2050 (FAO, 2019). Ethiopia’s livestock numbers are equally striking. The country has the largest cattle population in Africa, with an estimated 71 million live cattle and around 4 million slaughtered in 2023. It also maintains a large poultry population, with approximately 55 million chickens alive at any given time and about 80 million slaughtered annually. In addition, Ethiopia has sizable populations of small ruminants, including an estimated 54 million goats and 40 million sheep, although slaughter numbers for these species are much lower than for poultry, with around 16 million goats and 12 million sheep slaughtered in 2023.

Since joining the Addis Ababa University College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture, my compassion for animals has been defined by one word: impact. To me, 'Animal Welfare' is more than just a phrase; it is a clear call to action regarding our responsibilities toward sentient beings. It transforms mere sympathy into the meaningful work of changing animal lives. I first encountered this concept through SPANA, the world’s first global charity dedicated to working animal welfare. For decades, they have provided free veterinary care, owner training, and animal welfare education across Ethiopia. I am one of the many who have learned from their expertise and shared that knowledge to raise awareness. As they rebrand to Working Animals International , a name that perfectly reflects their lifelong mission, I want to thank them for their incredible contribution to animal welfare in Ethiopia. While the name SPANA will always hold a place of deep respect in our hearts, we look forward to the continued impact they will make under their new name! Yared E. @campus_voice_2016

🐾 Exciting Update: Joining Wachamo University This Sunday! 🐾 I am thrilled to announce that I will be joining the students at Wachamo University (WCU) this Sunday to share my journey in student leadership and advocacy. First, a huge congratulations to WCU for the official formation of their Animal Welfare Club! 🎊 Seeing student-led initiatives grow is a vital step toward a stronger "One Health" movement in our country. As a co-founder of the One Health Club and an active animal welfare advocate, I’ll be leading a webinar training focused on: Organizing a Club: Practical steps to building a sustainable student organization. The Power of Advocacy: How to effectively champion causes on and off campus. Defining Animal Welfare: Understanding its critical role in our professional and social responsibility. I’ve had the privilege of serving in various roles across university clubs, and I can’t wait to share those experiences with the next generation of leaders at WCU. 📅 Save the Date Topic: Club Organizing & Advocacy Training When: This Sunday, March 22 Time: 2:30 PM Anyone interested in collaborating with the newly formed club at WCU is warmly welcomed to join us. Let’s work together to make a lasting impact!
