CVMA Student Wins Top Prize in Human Rights Essay Competition December 10, 2025 – Addis Ababa, Ethiopia In celebration of International Human Rights Day 2025, the Center for Human Rights, in collaboration with the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR), has announced the winners of its essay competition titled “Our Everyday Essentials: Reclaiming Human Rights in the 21st Century.” We are proud to announce that Yared Ermiyas, a student from the College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture at Addis Ababa University, emerged as the first-place winner. His powerful essay, “Remove the Shadow,” eloquently argued that access to education must be a fundamental necessity for every child, not a matter of luck, highlighting the deep emotional and practical connection between education and a dignified life. Yared was awarded a mobile phone prize presented by H.E. Berhanu Adello, Chief Commissioner of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC). Commissioner Adello also extended an offer for Yared to begin an internship attachment at the National Bureau of the Human Rights Commission, providing a valuable opportunity for practical experience in the field. The awards ceremony featured a dynamic panel discussion where Yared and the other winners presented their essays and engaged with fellow students and audience members on critical issues related to freedom of expression and the right to education. The competition, which invited undergraduate students to reflect on the core human rights that shape our daily lives, successfully inspired thoughtful dialogue and showcased the intellectual talent within our university community. Congratulations to Yared Ermiyas and all the participants for raising your voices, sharing your vision, and helping to shape the future of human rights! A true Legend!💙 Biniyam Admasu during a wild fire in the Bale Mountains in Ethiopia, he is still in our hearts. During a memorial ceremony in the Bale Moutains his former FZS colleagues, his friends and his family now inaugurated a memorial statue to honour his passion and dedication to protect the Ethiopian wilderness. “Most people couldn’t understand my eternal feeling of loving nature & my vision to conserve It. So I would like to form a family of nature lovers & to work hard & leave a comfortable world for the next generation”, Binyiam is quoted on the statue. May Biniyam’s spirit live on and motivate all of us to achieve our best in what we do every day. 💙. @campus_Voice_2016

You don’t remember the exact day you stop being a child anymore. It’s like passing through a rain that starts like ውሽንፍር and becomes a ዶፍ ዝናብ። I think we notice change when it comes to others. People say, “ወፈርክ፣ አደክ፣ ትልቅ ሰው ሆንክ,” but sometimes we don’t feel that way. Sometimes we look into those mirrors and don’t recognize the reflection. We still feel the inner child, the uncertainty, the fine drizzle inside, even as the world sees the downpour. The space between how we're seen and how we feel, I think, that’s where adulthood often resides. It’s not that the child leaves, but the rain gets heavier, responsibilities layer like clouds, and the world starts expecting you to own an umbrella, even if you still sometimes want to dance in the drizzle. ቢሆንም Que sera sera!

Professor Tilahun Yilma /nomad scientist/ Professor Tilahun Yilma is the Founding Director of the International Laboratory of Molecular Biology (ILMB) and has been with UC Davis since 1986. The mission of the ILMB is to conduct and coordinate a research program that brings together experts in molecular biology, in order to facilitate work on the pathogenic mechanisms of human and animal tropical diseases. The long term goal of the ILMB is to facilitate and implement the transfer of technologies in molecular biology to developing countries that can lead to self-sufficiency. Yilma is noted for developing what the journal Nature described as one of the two outstanding vaccinia virus recombinant vaccines in the world. The vaccine is highly effective against rinderpest, a devastating viral disease of cattle in Africa and Asia. In addition, his team has developed a number of recombinant vaccines and rapid diagnostic kits for important diseases of livestock in the tropical regions of the world. He is also noted for developing a method for enhancing the safety and efficacy of recombinant vaccines with the use of cytokines as attenuating and adjuvant genes. Yilma has received many honors including the Ciba-Geigy Award, the highest international award in animal science, and the UC Davis Faculty Research Award (Highest Research Award). Yilma is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. Yilma has served on the Council of the NIH-NCRR, as a Member of the NSF Advisory Committee for the Office of International Science and Engineering, and is a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Center for Bio-Security Science, Los Alamos National Lab. Yilma is widely recognized for his work on the development of safe and efficacious recombinant vaccines and rapid diagnostic kits for both human and livestock diseases. Yilma has worked with a number of International Organizations including the WHO, FAO, OIE, AU, and was senior advisor to the Deputy Director of the IAEA. He is a member of the Board of Trustees, Science for Peace, Fondazione Umberto Veronesi, Milan, Italy. He has also worked with governments in both Asia and Africa including China, India, Egypt, Israel, Ethiopia,Sudan, Kenya, Sene Currently, He is in Visiting Ethiopian Biotechnology Institute and Discussing With EBTI Director General, Dr Kassahun Tesfaye. 2019.
