Brazilian drug queen #video#Brazil The only thing Alemao favela girls are interested in is money, says a former drug dealer from one of Rio’s biggest slums. So local women are lured into the world of drugs and prostitution. They deal and use drugs. Drug trafficking is the most frequent cause of imprisonment among women. Raquel de Oliveira is one of the women who had to establish herself in the criminal underworld from an early age. At the age of nine, her grandmother sold her to a gambling den owner. Later, she married the drug lord of La Rocinha, the largest favela in Rio. When he was killed in a police raid, Raquel became a drug trafficker herself. She described her turbulent story in a book and shared the highlights in our documentary, Model Prisoners. Follow: https://t.me/rtdocumentary

#photo#Brazil Mateus Pakente is a fisherman from Santana do Tapara in the Amazon. Drug traffickers offered Mateus $100,000 for his house close to a small port. A convenient location for cargo transit. But Mateus turned down the offer. Criminals regularly come to visit, threatening Mateus. He’s adamant and doesn’t want to move. He and his family will stay. RT Documentary’s Alexandr Panov and Vitaly Buzuev are working on a documentary featuring Mateus’s story. Stay tuned for the premiere! Follow: https://t.me/rtdocumentary

Jungle doctor #video#Brazil Dr Erik Jennings is like Marvel’s Doctor Strange. He’s rich and a successful neurosurgeon in Brazil who flies aircraft and sails yachts. Dr Erik is also one of the few allowed to visit the isolated Zo’e tribe. The Zo’e came in contact with outsiders only in the late 1980s. They soon started to fall ill from diseases they had never been exposed to. Dr Erik has been paying them visits deep in the Amazon rainforest to check their health for 20 years. Now it’s not just infectious viruses that threaten the Zo’e; pressure is mounting from mining companies, illegal logging and fires. #video#Brazil When children from Complexo de Alemao go to school, they know they have first to look left, right, and left again before crossing a road… in case there’s a gunfight between gangsters and police. Complexo de Alemao is one of Rio’s largest and most visible favelas. It’s a city within a city with its own rules and a source of Brazil’s organised crime. The ongoing war between government forces and gang members has kept residents in the crossfire. Since 2008, the city has established special Pacifying Police Units across Rio’s favelas to make streets safer. However, police have been accused of brutality and lack of accountability. Peek inside the life in Complexo de Alemao in our documentary, FavelaLive, and find out why people like and are proud of their favela. Follow: https://t.me/rtdocumentary

Slumdog Ballet Dancer #video#Brazil Luiz grew up in Complexo do Alemao, one of Brazil's largest slums. Boys there are expected to enjoy 'boyish' things, like playing football. But Luiz dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer. Although he had doubts because of the colour of his skin and what his family would say, his passion found him. Luiz entered a ballet school for deprived children run by the iconic Bolshoi Ballet from Russia. Children from all over South America compete for a place to learn classical dance in the best traditions of Russian ballet. We can't wait to see Luiz on the stage of the Bolshoi! 🩰 Follow: https://t.me/rtdocumentary
