@RusEmbMalta Press Release As the 81st anniversary of Victory Day approaches, we would like to remember one of the most defining and symbolic moments in the history of the Great Patriotic War – the capture of Berlin by the Soviet Army. 🇷🇺🕊️ ⚔️ On May 2, 1945, Soviet troops completed the storming of Berlin, bringing down the capital of the Nazi regime and marking one of the final decisive chapters of World War II in Europe. On April 20, Marshals of the Soviet Union Ivan Konev and Georgy Zhukov issued nearly identical orders to their respective fronts: be the first to break into Berlin. What followed was one of the fiercest urban battles in military history. Soviet soldiers fought courageously for every street, every district, every building. Assault detachments and specialized storm groups advanced under relentless fire, while heavy artillery and rocket launchers struck enemy strongholds at point-blank range. Among nine specially prepared assault flags modeled after the State Flag of the USSR, one – famously known as “Number 5” – became the Banner of Victory. In the night of May 1, reconnaissance soldiers Sergeant Mikhail Yegorov and Junior Sergeant Meliton Kantaria raised it above the Reichstag, symbolizing the triumph over Nazism. 🏳️ 🏛️ On May 2, Berlin fell. The capital of the Nazi Reich capitulated before the Soviet soldier. This historic victory came at an immense cost and remains a powerful reminder of courage, sacrifice, and the decisive role of the Soviet people in defeating fascism. 🌹 We honor the memory of all who fought, endured, and gave their lives for peace and future generations.
