Soviet sanatoriums, famous health resorts, or the dystopian USSR — read Anna Domini's series of essays exploring Soviet society and mentality through the phenomenon of the sanatorium pics: 1 Dragomys, Krasnodar Territory 2-3 Kurpaty, Crimea 4 Metallurg, Sochi

Third part of Sanatorium research by Anna Domini, where she reflects on Soviet medical system that formed people’s perception of themselves as just a human body: “Body’s stiffness and tension, a ban on the manifestation of mental disorders, fear of condemnation led people's bodies to quickly wear out, Soviet citizens looked older than they actually were...” reminder: 👉first essay on why she chose Sanatorium as the allegory of the Soviet Union; 👉second part on how Sanatorium is not what it seems on the surface: even though it is a resort, in reality residents have to abide by strict rules and have to live in a closed system.

As Leonid Tishkov's solo exhibition 'Only the stars are closer than the moon' is nearing its conclusion at MAMM, ODRA publishes a review of the post-conceptualist artist’s oeuvre by Nikita Malashenko. While being banned in the Soviet Union, Tishkov has become a true romantic. Today his works call for painful reflection: he raises questions of loneliness, desire and death. But the connection of these works conveys a humanistic and peace-loving meaning, so poignant in our frightening time. pics: 'Private Moon', 2003 until now

#readingroom делимся англоязычной литературой Moscow: Soviet Modernist Architecture 1955–1991 The first guidebook to Soviet Modernist architecture compiled by the architectural historians Anna Bronovitskaya and Nikolai Malinin, includes almost 100 buildings from the most famous landmarks to barely noticable but no less important monuments. Here are the facts about the Seasons of the year café that is now more recognizable as a Garage Museum of Contemporary Art ---> 👉The park had to be cleared of 'small temporary structures' in order to construct a building of 'metropolitan scale' and install wide new esplanades. 👉The neat parallelepiped on cantilevers above a ground floor made of shining glass, stemalite, and aluminum looked impressive, although even in 1968 a reviewer timidly pointed out that the architecture was not exactly suitable for a park, and that it would be better to break up the expanse of the walls with an open terrace and exterior stairs. According to the architects' logic it was more important to make maximum use of the location of the building, opening up views of the park from the rooms on the first floor. 👉In the 1980s, centralized supply became increasingly unreliable, and when perestroika resulted in private entrepreneurs being admitted to the park, visitors flocked to them. In the conditions of a market economy the cafe failed, and the abandoned building waited its turn to be demolished. 🍬With the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, the building received a new lease of life buy a book here

ODRA has visited a new exhibition called “The Return of Kolobok and a Few More Strange Attractors” organized by ICA graduates in the Center for Creative Industries Fabrika (until October 17) Reflecting on multiple versions of the present, past and future, emerging artists question the very notion of time. It looks like we have lost the time again, and the return of the past forms shape new spatial and temporal dimensions, changing the tide of history...? read our review here💫 pics: artworks by ICA graduates, 2022 Sonia Andrews, Varyushin Mikhail, Olga Scherbakova

ODRA continues to look into contemporary art in Russian regions. This time we go to Kazan --> curator and photography art researcher Daria Rakhmanova reviewed the artworks by local artists and photographers who have been trying to grasp the impact of the ever-changing urban landscapes on people’s sense of comfort and safety. One of the projects is called “Intrinsic Journey”: Dmitry Lookianov captures aesthetics of Russia's grey panel buildings and everyday landscapes in the country's most peripheral locations.

#GAMEART подводим итоги дневников или what to read on Sunday, а завтра подключайтесь к коллективной игре: 8 августа 3 pm CEST/4 pm MSC 🤍ODRA has collected the diaries of Russian artists participating in the virtual exhibition 'Game engine free verse', organized by Distant.gallery (the Netherlands). In their notes, artists reflect on game art and modernity. Some of the excerpts ---> Margarita Skomorokh (rkktkk) Computer games are more about computers, and as an artist I am inspired by computational aesthetics. Gaming, in my opinion, plays a secondary role here: it is an effective way to explore this aesthetics since both phenomena are characterized by structure and interactivity. Yuliya Kozhemyako (Supr) This is one of the key differences between art games and games as entertainment - moving away from genre clichés, rethinking popular mechanics, or refusing to use them. As a result, the player may not understand how to handle the object, give it up, and write a comment that it is not a game at all, because it does not meet his/her expectations and ideas about games, or is not entertaining enough. Kirill Makarov Gaming provides an opportunity for prototyping social relationships and interactions, a kind of training for the real. At the same time, it immerses the user in the space of the imaginary, which he can percieve as safe, but this is illusory safety. Anastasia Koroleva As for the practice of art games, this is a medium that allows the artist to work with a space that has no physical limitations. The difference between an art game and entertainment, in my opinion, is the mechanics of interactivity and the concept that becomes fundamental to the work. An entertaining game most often has some kind of simple scenario, you need to go through some tasks, perform some action in order to get points or go to the next level. The practice of an artistic game is much more complex in its structure... Ksenia Kononenko It turned out that effective work with the unconscious could be achieved with the use of the game mechanics, at the expense of allowing mastery of the Imaginary. I like that it is the only tool in which it is possible for different kinds of mediums to exist without competing for attention, though of course there is the issue of the body. play games
